UK: "The publishing market is tough at the moment"
The Guardian reports that after accusations by both Associated's London Lite and News International's thelondonpaper of their rival dumping papers to up distribution figures, the ABC has found that both were indeed partaking in the unfair practice. The daily says that dumping "undermines the whole free newspaper market as an advertising medium... (and) Such shenanigans... do little to support the image of newspaper publishing as being a responsible and socially-aware industry."
For paid-for dailies, 20% of their distributed copies are heading straight back to be pulped, a number that hits 40% when it comes to magazines.
As for circulations, popular dailies were down 4.4%, mid-market 4.5%, popular Sundays 7% and mid-market Sundays 4.6%
About the only bright spot was the quality daily market's smaller loss of 1.8 of circulation, a figure that drops to -6.2% on Sundays.
