US: NYTimes, McClatchy partnering with big search companies

Two newspaper companies have recently taken steps to make the Internet work for their newspapers. The New York Times has begun offering its crossword puzzles on Google, while McClatchy Co. is talking to Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft about advertising partnerships.

Users can add the New York Times “Classic Crossword Widget” to their Google homepages. The widget features a new puzzle every week from a rotating archive of over 1,000 puzzles.

Additionally, McClatchy Co., owner of 31 daily US newspapers, is in talks to form advertising partnerships with Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft, seeking to increase traffic to its sites and revenue from the Internet.

Google and Yahoo want to get into local markets, and they view it as advantageous to partner with us because they don't want to hire a bunch of employees,'' McClatchy CEO Gary Pruitt said. “It's a partnership that makes sense.''

While overall advertising revenue at McClatchy Co. has declined 5.5% in the first two months of this year, online ad revenue rose 22% last year and is expected to continue this year.

McClatchy already has a limited ad partnership with Google and recently entered an agreement to provide international news to Yahoo.
