US: New York Post offering near-free subscriptions
Some see the move as an isolated change from a paper desperate to up circulation and destroy its enemy. In 2000, the Post halved its newsstand price to 25 cents and finally overtook rival the Daily News in weekday circulation last fall.
Most, however, see the price as part of the larger trend toward free news.
"It's a small step to giving it away," said Piet Bakker of newspaperinnovation.com, which tracks free dailies. Many formerly paid-content European newspapers, he said, are giving papers away to part of their readership. "We will definitely see more models like this."
"There will be more people coming into this space," said Daniel Magnus, publisher of Metro New York. "The traditional newspaper model in the eyes of investors is done."
