UK: Free newspapers face ban if they don't recycle

Posted by Lindsay Berrigan on April 17, 2007 at 3:15 PM
If London’s free afternoon dailies London Lite and thelondonpaper don’t pay for a sufficient recycling service for discarded copies of their papers, the two could face a surprise end to their circulation war: distribution bans.
Westminster City Council wants £500,000 within a week to set up a recycling service but says the two publishers have offered only half of that. The council says it collects an extra 20 tons of paper per week since the papers, which distribute one million copies each day, were introduced.

Both papers say they are already in talks with the council about the issue and have pledged support already.
