Spain: the freesheet war moves online
The competition between free papers in Spain is leaving the streets to take place on the internet, as free papers are developing their online editions.
The Journal PRNoticias revealed last week that most important Spanish free newspapers are revamping their online versions to increase their number of readers and to ready themselves for the competition.
Currently, the four most important free papers in Spain are: Metro, 20 Minutos, Que! and ADN. The circulation of free papers is about 4,600,000 copies per day, 300,000 more than the paid press.
Metro has renovated its website and incorporated new content and services. For example, they have created innovations such as “Metro in music.” This is a music creation contest for which readers can vote for the songs they like.
20 Minutos is the leader of Spanish freesheets online. Recently 20 Minutos made some changes on its web site. The website delivers breaking news constantly. With these innovations, 20 Minutos wants to offer more interaction between the print and online versions. To encourage this, 20 Minutos includes links to their online version in their printed edition.
The online site Que! gives a lot of importance to blogs. This freeshet includes the opinion of readers both in the print and online version. Moreover, one of its strategies is to focus on regional and local news.
ADN, of the El Planeta Group, has launched some initiatives to compete by focusing on citizen journalism. ADN was created to fulfill specifically the information needs of hundreds of thousands of citizens.
In conclusion, Spanish free papers are revamping their online version to reinforce their printed version and to generate more synergy between both.

Often it is upper management that is the inhibitor of innovation. Due to the current state of the Newspaper Industry, they don't want to invest in anything without an immediate ROI. With the frequent staff cutbacks there is little time for anyone to dedicate to producing a regular podcast show of decent quality. While most think, "it would be a good idea" ... "something we should probably do" ... The reality is there is no time or money for these types of projects. As a podcast tools and service provider Podcast News Service can solve these problems by providing Newspapers a podcast outsourcing option based on a revenue share model. Allowing Newspapers to start podcasting using their existing articles without tying up valuable staff or creating new costs.
