Spain: paid-for dailies imitating free papers?
The online edition of 20 Minutos claimed a few days ago that Spanish paid-for dailies are imitating free papers, in an effort to reproduce the great success of the freebies since they have appeared.
These declarations were made by Chaves at the inauguration of the second National Congress of Editors and Periodic Publications (Congreso Nacional de Publicationes Periódicas), which took place few days ago in Marbella, south of Spain.
According to 20 Minutos, there won’t be any paid-for newspapers in Spain in the future. As the number of paid-for dailies decreases, that of free papers increases. “The paid-for dailies will lose force with reference to the free papers, online newspapers, cell phones and other electronic devices,” said Chaves.
METRO, 20 Minutos, Qué!, and ADN,- all free papers – are the leaders in audience and circulation in Spain. Their combined circulation is about 4,6 million daily copies - 300,000 more than the paid-for dailies.
Not everything is rosy for free newspapers though. For example, although Qué! has led an aggressive strategy of expansion and distribution, and is among the leaders in circulation and number of readers, this isn’t reflected in Qué!’s financial results. According to PR Noticias, Qué! is still in the red.
Despite other gloomy predictions, the news is not all bad for printed newspapers. The president of media group Bassat & Ogilvy, Lluís Bassat, believes that the printed newspapers will not disappear. They will become the complement of the digital editions.
Nobody has the last word or a real solution though. The winning newspaper will be the newspaper that finds new business opportunities and develop its media platforms according to the requirements of the readers and the market.
