US: Boston Globe union outraged over outsourcing
The union began Monday by placing ads in rival newspaper the Boston Herald and on the radio.
Protesting began after the New York Times Company, which owns the Globe, recently cut 120 jobs and decided to outsource the work of 50 advertising and circulation workers to Bangalore, India.
The union says workers had already agreed to a partial wage freeze and health care cuts before finding out about the outsourcing.
To convince readers of their stance, the union is warning of the dangers of the Globe’s shipping account and billing information overseas.
The Globe is, of course, not the first US newspaper to ship work to India. The World Association of Newspapers has monitored this trend as the newspaper industry looks to a common US business model to cut costs.
