UK: Telegraph online number one?
The Telegraph led a poster ad campaign calling its website “Britain’s number one quality newspaper website.”
An independent Nielsen NetRatings study just revealed that last December’s unique audience for Guardian Unlimited was 2,125,000, Times Online counted 1,587,000 visitors, and Telegraph.co.uk a mere 1,007,000.
Another study by ABC Electronic, and one by Comscore, also gave reason to the Guardian and Times over the Telegraph’s website.
As usual in these matters, the divergence comes from the accounting methods used on one hand by the Telegraph’s internet monitor, Hitwise, and those used by the two other newspapers.
It seems this is much ado about nothing for a simple ad campaign, but as far as straight figures speak, Telegraph.co.uk probably doesn’t have the largest number of visitors for a UK newspaper website.
