UK: Freesheets must clean up costs or face ban

The two most prominent free evening newspaper titles in London, The London Paper and London Lite, have been told that they must contribute towards the £500,000 clean-up cost or face a ban by Westminster City Council.
An additional three tonnes of waste (a quarter of all waste collected) is generated every day in Westminster due to the 'deluge' of the London Paper and London Lite, the council said. It is able to ban the newspapers from the relevant areas of London under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act, which bans the distribution of free literature if it pollutes the environment
The cost will include the cleaning up of free papers and the provision of an extra 300 recycling bins over the next two years.
A News International spokeswoman said: "We have been working together with Westminster Council since the launch of the London Paper and are now in further negotiations with them to resolve their current issues."
Steve Auckland, managing director of London Lite, said that the paper had been in talks about the waste issue with councils in the capital since it launched.
"What we have suggested to [Westminster] council is that we will supply them with recycling bins and we will help towards them recycling the copies," Auckland added.
Westminster council is said to be considering the offer.
This news follows a report that these free papers increased the amount of paper waste in the London Underground by 1.5 tons. Also, in the US, a report found that free newspapers handed out at subway stations in New York were largely responsible for the growth in subway floods and fires.

I'm not so sure that individual bloggers wield that much influence in the US. In fact, I think most of the most influential bloggers already had mainstream successful careers.
