The end of the TV-newspaper couple?
Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on January 11, 2007 at 4:21 PM
As several large newspaper and TV publishers consider parting with one side of their company, this has led Frank Ahrens, from the Washington Post, to wonder if it’s the end of a combination that had strived and succeeded in the past.
New York Times Co. just sold its nine TV stations for nearly $600 million.
Tribune Co. could sell its 24 broadcast stations independently from its newspaper division, due to the difficulties so far finding a buyer for the whole company.
Scripps just announced it was considering the opposite: selling its newspaper division in order to focus on more profitable digital operations.
In 2000, Times Co. Chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr. had said: "From a business perspective, we will not achieve the financial success that can be ours without entering the world of television."
Those were the days of the happy couple, when “Executives talked of synergy between the two media, with newspaper reporters broadcasting their expertise on television, and TV stations providing a wider reach for the print brand,” reported the Post.
It seems the business perspective has changed. Nowadays, the real future is seen in short-form videos, online clips and such YouTube recipes. Thus newspapers are waving goodbye to broadcasters.
Instead they train their reporters to shoot videos from handheld cameras, as they write their article, and ask their readers to submit free user-generated pictures and videos on their news websites.
