News International to launch weekly analytical news
Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on January 23, 2007 at 3:30 PM
News International’s (NI) is considering the launch of Spectrum, a weekly magazine focused on comments and analysis. Weekly news digests are grasping the interest of newspaper publishers.
NI’s magazine division is currently researching the venture’s commercials.
The magazine will probably be oriented around analysis. This reflects what many editors already foresee: the increasing importance of opinion and analysis in news content.
The magazine would serve as a complement of NI’s papers.
It would also compete with BBC Magazines’ also planned news weekly, which could be launched in April.
The market for news weeklies is growing, more so than dailies, and many publishers are considering the option as a possibly viable complement to their papers.
Dennis Publishing’s The Week increased sales by 13.9% between year-to-year in the first half of 2006, while The Spectator’s sales increased 4.4%.
