US: NYT adds social sharing buttons
Posted by Allie Judson on December 11, 2006 at 3:45 PM
The New York Times has added a new service making it easier for users to link and post stories on social news and networking sites Digg, Facebook and Newsvine. Linking buttons were added this morning but will not be available on Time Select articles, newspaper's premium content offering, staff blogs or wire stories.
Though there is no revenue sharing agreement, all three social sites involved are happy to be linked with the Times.
"It is one of the world's most established newspapers and we have a great amount of respect for them, so the prospect of helping their audience get more out of their news and helping The Times doing some of the new things that they are looking at doing is very good for us," Newsvine Chief Executive Mike Davidson said. "We look at it as the beginning of, perhaps, a more meaningful relationship."
The Times hopes the links will help the paper tap into the more technological orientated audience and has not yet ruled out other linking buttons or even allowing users to post directly on the site.
