UK: November ABC numbers

UK newspaper circulation numbers for November have been released showing a daily market decline from last year of 3.7% and 6.2% decline for Sunday editions. Part of the lower numbers can be attributed to the re-launches and promotions that took place last November giving papers higher numbers.
Though not all papers saw big drops like the Sunday Observer, which went up 2.6%, others seemed to continue their downward trend. Many media analysts watched the recently introduced Sunday Times £2 cover price cause the weekly to drop 7.6%.
Aside from raw circulation figures the ABC uncovered some new data. Only 88% of newspaper sales in November were made at full price. Free distributions on airplanes, hotels, and discounted subscriptions have gone up 3% in the last year.
This causes some advertisers to wonder if free or discounted papers are the publisher’s way of manipulating the data. Because of many different factors, some question if a reader buying the paper at full price will be worth the same as someone who just picks up the paper on a plane or in the mall. The different types of readers give a new view to the exact circulation numbers used by papers.
