UK: Free paper can’t summon enough money

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on December 18, 2006 at 1:00 PM
Is the rush to freesheets already slowing down? The government department, Transport for London, just refused a contract for another afternoon free paper, due to insufficient bids.
London Lite, owned by Associated Newspapers (AP), and thelondonpaper, owned by News International (NI), already battle for the afternoon free paper market in London. But these papers are distributed outside the stations.

In October, thelondonpaper had won the contract to be distributed inside 10 main Network Rail stations.

Over half of London’s rail passengers begin or end their afternoon journey at one of those stations, which means NI could reach up to one million passengers per day.

AP will continue to distribute its morning Metro edition inside the Network Rail stations – a monopoly – under the same conditions.
