Old media editors embrace new media?

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on December 12, 2006 at 10:26 AM
How about forgetting the traditional feud between old media and new media and working together to survive? It may seem idealistic, perhaps even naïve, but this was the main idea discussed by a panel of journalists and top editors in the Time Life Building (NY) on Dec. 7th.
During the event, “Future of News,” Jill Abramson, managing editor of the New York Times, alongside Jeff Jarvis, founder of buzzmachine.com and John Caroll, former editor for the Los Angeles Times, reminded of the importance of traditional media in providing a credible and influential source.

But at the same time they insisted on the necessity of embracing new media, “because what seemed like a challenge now seems more like an opportunity,” said Time Inc. CEO Ann Moore.

For example, the Internet platform can allow traditional newspapers and television to learn more about their audience: they can pinpoint popular news stories, see how long these remain popular, and determine which topics suit specific readerships.

Jarvis also called for collaboration with the new trend of participatory journalism. “Now that anyone can do journalism, we need to find more ways to collaborate in what I like to call networked journalism. We can work together as professionals and amateurs to deliver the news that influences society,” he said.

It seems editors from traditional media are gradually realizing they should surf the wave the best they can, rather than waste their efforts wading against the tide.

How do I find a Martha Stewart column re "Cookie Making Problems" appearing in the Star a couple of weeks ago? Need information to pass on to Grandaughters.

Of course, pointing out the need for 'old media' to embrace 'new media ' is strategically pretty straightforward, but tactically considerably more complex. No doubt, the way forward demands a commitment to experimentation, to trial and error. Those with the stomach for risk and the courage (and pockets) to learn from failure will be around to publish another day.
