France: Culture Minister offers newspapers extra subsidization

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on December 13, 2006 at 3:27 PM
French newspapers have traditionally been State-subsidized – even upholstered – but French Culture Minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres deemed this was not enough. He is proposing a policy that would allow financial contributions made to the newspaper industry to be tax-deductible.

The Culture Minister’s plan is to establish an industry-wide Foundation, or that each paper sets up its own foundation. Contributions to the foundation would be tax-deductible.

The 2007 budget for newspaper subsidizations is already up to €274 million – a 22% increase since 2005.

Many important French newspapers have suffered serious economic drawbacks in the past years (Le Monde, Le Figaro and Libération for example) and seemed destined to closing down.

Fortunately, thanks to government funding and some important French businessmen, these publications have kept afloat. This new policy will certainly help French newspapers, but it also is representative of the industry’s difficulties.

It may also be interpreted as a preventive action in preparation for the near-future establishment of a French version of Axel Springer's Bild, the most-circulated daily across Europe.

I strongly suspect Mr. Eric Stander of the Aktuapers Publishing Company in Pretoria, South Africa is publishing my work without my permission. I have written him 15 email letters, and had numerous contacts in SA attempt to get information on the status of my works but failed. The response is always,
“I will get back with you as soon as I hear from the publisher.”

This has been going on since September 2005. To date I have not heard anything! Not a word from this Christian person who profess to be a man of God. I need help to get information about my 9 children’s stories. I am now back home in Detroit…who can help me? When I was in SA teaching, he claimed they were interested in publishing my stories in the South African School System – He also stated he planned to publish them in India and the USA, but first he wanted to see if they were what he was looking for - so he claimed to have an independent reader review my works first; subsequently my materials would be passed forward to the school committee for review.

The last information that I received directly from Eric was that “they were very impressed with my work” This so-called a minister of faith business number is: 012-342-1998/9 or 082-554-3083, ask for Eric Stander.

Don’t worry you will get the same message, “As soon as we hear something from the publisher we will let you know.”

I'm shocked at the allegations made by the Author of this letter. At no stage have we been approached by anyone about the status of the submissions. As soon as we recieve Joanne's physical address, we will mail her work back to her. Please e-mail this information to info@actuapress.co.za

As Commissioning Editor for Actua Press and published author I take the strongest exception to the allegations made by Joanne. Mr Stander is a committed Christian publisher, a respected member of the community and to vilify him on the Internet like this is unacceptable. In all my dealings with him as publisher I have found him to be honest, open and always ready to do his utmost best for the many writers dealing with him. My books have been prescribed for schools nationally, my royalties are always paid timeously and my books published on high quality paper, with excellent illustrations and a highly professional finish. I unconditionally recommend Eric Stander and Actua Press to any new writer and am sure that you will get the same expertise and enthusiasm coming your way regarding your writing as I did. Eric Stander is a writer's mentor and friend of the highest integrity.
Joy and Blessings
