US: WaPo re-mixing newsroom

Posted by Allie Judson on November 15, 2006 at 4:18 PM
Yesterday in a memo to Washington Post staffers, executive editor Leonard Downie, Jr. announced that the paper will be experiencing future changes with the goals of gaining readership in the print edition and helping the website to continue to grow.
The plan includes, newsroom reductions, “tightening of the paper’s news hole,” and shortening stories. "We are not just cutting costs. We believe that everything we are doing will make the newspaper stronger and increase readership of the printed paper and washingtonpost.com,” said Downie. "We are re-directing newsroom staff and resources to our highest priority journalism in print and on the Web.”

Staff-wise the WaPo will be cutting the number of reporters and taking out general categories causing writers to have more specific categories. Also along the lines of more focused reporting, journalists will now have story length guidelines to adhere to.

The finincal tables and the business section as a whole will also be receiving a makeover to make it more appealing. Other sections such as the health, food, and home will be completely revamped in the coming months to attract more readers.

WaPo news editors are scheduled to meet sometime next month to discuss further steps to lead their paper forward.
