UK: Associated winning freesheet war, its Evening Standard suffering

Posted by John Burke on October 16, 2006 at 10:27 AM
ABC figures for September show that Associated Newspapers's free afternoon London Lite topped News International's thelondonpaper by a little over 30,000, distributing an average of 359,389 copies, not quite the 400,000 the paper produces every day. The paid-for Evening Standard took a huge hit from the influx of freesheets losing 7.6% of its already dwindling circulation.

The free papers are not only affecting the Standard's circulation, but also its vendors who work on commission and have seen their sales drop dramatically. The Guardian writes that there have been incidences of violence by Standard hawkers towards thelondonpaper distributors. Some of the Standard's employees have apparently jumped ship and joined up with the free papers.

Two other London freepapers, the financial City AM and Metro, also recorded gains, distributing 90,000 and 549,713 respectively.
