UK: London Lite winning free paper wars

London Lite is inching ahead of Thelondonpaper in London’s freesheet battle.  London Lite is reporting its distribution at 400,000, whereas Thelondonpaper has hit only 360,000.

Brand Republic reports that both papers are expected to release ABC data for September.  Thelondonpaper’s figure may end up even lower than 360,000, as the freesheet experienced some tracking problems in its first two weeks.

Although London Lite is emerging a victor in terms of freesheets, its success may be hitting Associated Newspapers associate Evening Standard harder than hoped.  A few weeks ago the company reported that circulation of the Standard was down only 7,000.  Sources put that figure closer to 48,000.

Thelondonpaper is not showing any signs of backing down.  General manager Ian Clark said: "Associated has been ring-fencing Tube stations, so our learnings from the first couple of weeks have seen us move towards trying to get the right sort of people."

I live in central London, have done for the last year.Every day I use the tube public transport system and 95% of the time find it good and efficient. It amazes me though as each day I shoulder through the throng of commuters steaming in and out of the stations, Platforms that a moment ago were deserted now teamed with thousands of people, all shoving toward 2 escalators that reach hundred feet up to street level. An impressive sight, but it is the silence that catches my attention, it always does, nothing but soles to stone and the scrape of one coat against another.Occasionally a voice will carry, but overall the procession of millions of people that parade in every morning and then out every evening on one of the busiest subway systems in the world is somber.

After travelling around some 3rd world countries especially Guatemala, which the U.S.A sold hundreds of old school buses for them to use as public transport. They call these chicken buses and if your fortunate to travel on one you will know why, as well as seating 4 to a 2 seater with kids on your lap and the isles jam packed 4 wide for sometimes distances for a few hours, you also share this with the locals market products, from baskets of dried fish to live chickens or dead ones, certainly an experience.

Then to come back to london and read the local paper where people can write in random txts the most common ones are tube commuters complaining about others, eg:could people who listen to ipods please keep the music down, eating on the tube is bad manners, could people on the tube early in the morning please keep there conversations down to a minimum, and getting death stares my self when having a laugh with friends by commuters who are so self absorbed, so in a hurry to get to wherever they re going they dont give 2 shits about the person next to them.

If people would stop for a moment, say a hello or help someone rather than complain, and kick up a stink every time theres a delay even though they have an indispensable transportation system, that not one person questions the initial cost or subsequent upkeep that demands billions of pounds a year for maintenance but costs a couple £ a ride.

you are fortunate as it is to live where you can ride any of the stations dotting the city, some works of art with florid stucco, pillers and piers, gold and glass....

Dear sir/madam,

A few days ago in your Lodon Lite you had a two page spread about bollywood stars being compared to hollywood stars. There was one issuse for male stars and another one for female stars.

I was very interested in reading up on this and was wondering if it possible for you to please send me that particular London Lite paper issue.

Thank you!

Yours Sincerely,
Kalpesh Patel

Hi;
I think I've got a story you might be interested in. I got to London last year on the 24th of February and studied for a single term at a university for an MA degree. After my visa switching was refused by the Home Office I was advised by the university authorities to get back to my country (Iran) ASAP and get my visa there. I returned with a new-born baby on the 29th of December 2006 and went straight to the Visa Office but they have refused me twice and my file is being sent to the UK for an appeal which takes no less than 6 months. The university has been avoiding any further help because they say they have no authority in visa cases, the Visa Office accuses me of deception because (the university's) sending our passports to the Home Office has been a deception I have inadvertently committed, the finance office says because my first term is finished and I have duly handed in my assignments I won't be returned any of my registration money for that term, all our stuff is in London, and as you can see I have to pay for a misunderstanding between my university and the Visa Office. This week could be my last chance to get back to the university and continue my studies, and because everybody has turned their backs on me I have no choice but to sell my story to the collective justice in the heart of all the people in the UK or anywhere else in the world. If you think you are interested please tell me about the conditions of having my story published in the papers.

Yours Sincerely
V.J
