US: more cutbacks for foreign bureaus
Posted by John Burke on July 7, 2006 at 1:04 PM
The Tribune Co., in the face of a company buyback of shares, is eliminating some foreign bureaus, reports Reuters. The Moscow and Johannesburg bureaux of the Baltimore Sun will be shut over the next 18 months and Newsday will lose its Beirut and Islamabad offices.
Sun editor Tim Franklin said that the company's international reporting will not be affected by the cutbacks and that they are simply part of the rapid changes taking place in the newspaper industry. "You can read foreign news coverage on the Web in a way you couldn't do 10 years ago," said Franklin.
