US: NYT to run ads on front of business section

Posted by Maddie Hanna on June 22, 2006 at 11:14 AM
In two weeks, the New York Times will begin running ads on the front page of its business section — a cost-saving move that a number of financially struggling US papers are considering or pursuing.

The NYT has already placed ads on the front of its Sunday Metro section. The new business ads will run across the bottom of the section’s front page, NYT executive editor Bill Keller announced at a staff meeting Tuesday.

USA Today already sells advertising space on its front page, the NYT reported, and the Wall Street Journal has said it will consider the practice as well.

It’s also possible that the NYT will shrink its pages — again, an attempt to cut costs that follows similar measures the company already took this year, such as using lighter-weight paper, eliminating the television section and moving stock tables online.
