The New York Times now speaks Russian in Izvestia

The famous Russian newspaper Izvestia and The New York Times are introducing the first Russian-language version of the New York Times International Weekly in Moscow editions of Izvestia, 19th June.

The weekly supplement retains the look of the American daily. Izvestia designers have for the first time rendered the signature typefaces of The New York Times  – Cheltenham and Franklin Gothic for headlines, and Imperial for the text – into Cyrillic, and the pages feature graphics, photos and illustrations that originally appeared in the paper. All articles in the eight-page supplement, which Izvestia readers will receive every Monday, are selected and edited specifically for Izvestia readers by The Times’s editors.

Izvestia is one of 23 leading newspapers around the world that offer a version of the International Weekly to their readers. Articles complement and expand the coverage in Izvestia. Topics include world trends, economy, business, science, arts, lifestyle and sports, as well as commentary by The Times’s  opinion columnists.

Izvestia and The New York Times began cooperating in February 2005, publishing the International Weekly in English. Surveys showed that the supplement attracted young readers and others who appreciated its diverse points of view and varied coverage.

“We have decided to invest more in order to meet the requirements of all our readers who are interested to know the views of America’s leading newspaper, not just those who know English well,” said Izvestia C.E.O. Petr Godlevsky.

Commenting on the content of the International Weekly, Vladimir Mamontov, editor in chief of Izvestia, said: “The New York Times material is a good addition to our own content. These articles offer interesting facts and events that either were not covered by Izvestia or were presented from another point of view.”

Bill Keller, executive editor of The Times said: “The International Weekly presents some of the best reporting and writing from our paper each week in a colorful and attractive package. We are pleased that this translation will make this material available to a larger audience of Russian readers.”

Articles from the supplement are also published on the Izvestia Web site:   http://www.izvestia.ru/nytimes/.
