US: concern over potential newspaper monopoly

Posted by John Burke on May 12, 2006 at 11:08 AM

An impending deal between William Dean Singleton, boss of MediaNews, and the publisher McClatchy has raised the eyes of six Congressmen who have demanded an investigation into a possible illegal monopoly. Singleton has bid for 4 of the former Knight Ridder papers that McClatchy is selling off, 3 of which are in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Hearst Company, owner of the other major SF paper, the Chronicle, is also in on the deal. Said the Congressmen, "We are concerned that this transfer could diminish the quality and depth of news coverage in a Bay Area of more than 9 million people."
