Spain: Internet and free papers are newspapers' "main challenges"

Posted by John Burke on May 24, 2006 at 12:28 PM
At a roundtable of the Asociacion de la Prensa de Madrid, the heads of Spain's top four papers acknowledged that the global newspaper industry was in a "permanent crisis", concluding that the Internet and free papers pose the biggest threat.

Although realizing that the future is "unpredictable", they said that there are "clear trends." Pedro G. Cuartango of El Mundo made several points:

  • papers that print general news today will have to specialize
  • only large quality newspapers with strong brand names will survive, however with very different business and labor models
  • relationships with producers of video and new forms of distribution will emerge
  • in a world where most people only see images, the written press is becoming devalued

Additional admissions of "strategic errors" included promotions which attracted "clients, not readers" and negatively affected the quality of papers.

In a contradictory message, Alfredo Semprun, an editor for La Razon said the Internet is beneficial for newspapers because it allows them to publish things like regional news that don't fit in the paper. Semrun also felt that free papers create readers for paid-for papers because they make the reader want to go deeper into the story.
