Metro moves into Mexico, sizing up London

Posted by John Burke on May 18, 2006 at 3:16 PM
The world's third largest newspaper by distribution, the freesheet Metro, has worked its way into Mexico, launching its familiar green masthead in the world's second largest city. Back across the pond, Pelle Tornberg, Metro International's chief, is thirsty for competition in the English capital, planning to launch an afternoon paper. But there are dangers.

“London is the best newspaper city in the world. Nobody has ever succeeded in making an afternoon freesheet work, but there is room for more competition here,” said Tornberg.

Presently, Metro has partnered with Associated Newspapers to help with the advertising for its freesheet, also called Metro. But with Tornberg's company growing quickly, already up to 69 editions in 93 cities, he seems confident that the Swedish-based freesheet can thrive in the London commuter market.

Free television and radio outlets have expanded the audience and advertising market. The outlets have created a generation that believes news is free. Likewise, free newspapers are the future of the print media all over the world.
