Springer to launch new Polish daily

Posted by Diana Epstein on April 10, 2006 at 5:11 PM

German media giant Axel Springer is set to launch a new upper-market daily in Poland, said industry sources. “The newspaper, the Polish version of Die Welt, is designed to compete with daily Gazeta Wyborcza owned by Polish media group Agora and broadsheet Rzeczpospolita controlled by Norway's Orkla,” said Reuters.

Although no launch date is set, the company is currently working on a new ‘quality daily’ in Poland, said a spokeswoman for Springer. This new paper will be Springer's second daily in the “biggest central European market” after Springer’s tabloid Fakt, which was launched three years ago and quickly became a hit, said Reuters.

Springer has set a huge promotion budget and will hire experienced journalists, many of which work at other Polish newspapers.

"Springer is ready to start a media campaign in the second half of next week and the new daily should hit the newsstands after the Easter holidays," one media business source familiar with Springer's plans told Reuters.
