More newspapers to sign up for blog content distribution system

Posted by Diana Epstein on April 10, 2006 at 12:22 PM

Syndicated blog service Blogburst was recently launched, delivering commentary from 600 bloggers for use by newspaper publishers. Blogs, which are now increasing in popularity as well as a credible source of communication, are becoming increasingly a part of mainstream media.

Pluck Corp., which is the service provider of BlogBurst, will distribute credible blogs that have been edited and reviewed by BlogBurst staff. Providing newspapers with “expert blog commentary” on everything in news or feature sections for both print and online services, the content will rang in topics from travel to technology, areas where publishers may not have dedicated staff, said Pluck Chief executive Dave Panos.

The bloggers, in return, are offered a wider distribution for their writing, allowing them to make more money off of online advertising because the online syndicate will drive traffic to these blog sites.

Paid syndication of blogs is a start by corporations in creating a money-making service where money may easily not be made. Although the system may not end up being profitable, it is a step in the right direction by newspapers to incorporate the popularity of blogs as a form of open communication and credible information.

"The lines between the mainstream media and the rest of the world will start to blur, not because people (bloggers) are joining the mainstream media, but because of the opposite effect: the mainstream media rejoins the people," said Jeff Jarvis, the former TV Guide media critic turned blogger.

Pluck initially has signed up Gannett Co. Inc., Washington Post Co., San Francisco Chronicle, Austin American-Statesman and San Antonio Express. Eventually, the Austin, Texas-based company will offer BlogBurst editorial materials to niche business and overseas publications.
