US: journalists launch website to save their paper

Posted by Diana Epstein on March 17, 2006 at 3:08 PM

Writers at the San Jose Mercury News, one of the 12 papers to be sold by McClatchy (see previous posting) in the wake of the sale of Knight Ridder, have launched a SaveTheMerc.com to drum up support to save their paper. The site asks readers to “join the employees of the Mercury News and voice your support for preserving this vital civic institution."

The site claims that "Silicon Valley deserves a daily newspaper equal to the ambitions and accomplishments of its readers."

Visitors are asked to sign a statement in support that the paper continue to have high standards for news even under new ownership. "We do not want the sale of the Mercury news to lead to a smaller, less ambitious newspaper."
