US: 2005 proved a 2.5% increase in print and online newspaper advertising
Although print advertising continues to provide the most revenue for newspapers, 2005 showed an increase in advertising on newspaper web sites. According to preliminary estimates from the Newspaper Association of America (NAA), web site advertising totaled $14.3 billion in the fourth quarter of 2005, a 1.4 percent increase over the same period a year earlier.
This marks the seventh consecutive quarter of double-digit online increases. In 2005, advertising spending on newspaper web sites increased 31.5 percent, which totaled a new record of $ 2.0 billion.
“These ad spending estimates for 2005 demonstrate that newspapers are successfully monetizing the value of their Internet investments, leveraging online advertising opportunities and building consumer loyalties on the Web,” said NAA President and CEO John Strum.
In the last quarter spending for print ads in newspapers increased 0.4 percent from the same period last year whereas for the full year, ad spending in print and online newspapers increased 2.5 percent to $ 49.4 billion. The largest revenue came from classified advertising, with a total classified spending increase of 4.2 percent to $ 17.3 billion. Print retail was up 0.8 percent to $ 22.2 billion while national advertising dipped 2.1 percent to $ 7.9 billion.
