UK: T-Mobile launches newspaper for mobile phone users
Mobile communication company T-Mobile is extending its mobile phone applications after two years in the making. T-Mobile has launched a Flash based news system available on portable devices that will now make available what they call the first newspaper for phone users.
Set to cost about £6 per month, although it is free until October, the new magazine, titled News Express, will feature news, sports, regional weather including maps of the UK and entertainment gossip.
This new system does not require online access but news is “pushed” to your phone. The news is then stored and can be accessed when in places with no mobile coverage. Two editors will be behind the project, sending news out in shifts: one in the morning and one in the evening.
T-Mobile, without any affiliation to newspapers or news organizations, would be the first mobile provider to create “original publishing.” Recent surveys (see former posting) have shown that customers prefer a single service provide for their mobile but are unwilling to pay extra for new services. Because T-Mobile is offering a newspaper-like service tacked on to it’s monthly bill, the company may see some success with this new service.
