UK: Guardian grabs newspaper of the year prize

Posted by John Burke on March 21, 2006 at 9:54 AM
The British Press Awards has given The Guardian its newspaper of the year honor. The paper, which switched to an all-color Berliner format last September, was praised for its redesign and its "contribution to British Press."

Alan Rusbridger, the paper's editor in receiving the award said, ""It was the most important year in the Guardian's recent history. In many respects it has been a lonely year, but I always had the conviction that one of the most important things about the British press is its variety and it would have been a dull old world if we had followed everyone else tabloid. This award celebrates something different, and that we have succeeded in our ambitions."

The Berliner format had already been awarded the "world's best designed newspaper" by the Society for News Design.

The Guardian's Sunday sister, the Observer also won three awards.

Overall, changes in format have led to moderate increases in circulation for the British press.
