Canada : The Globe and Mail only paper to register gains

The only Toronto-based newspaper to register gains last year was The Globe and Mail, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulation. Figures showed The Globe’s average weekday circulation up 3.3 % while Saturday circulation rose 3.8% compared to last year.
he Globe and Mail is the only Toronto-based paper to post gains at a time when the newspaper industry in North America and as a whole is battling declining numbers in circulation.
Phillip Crawley, Globe and Mail publisher, said the newspaper's strategy has been to expand circulation, while not discounting its cover price, as many North American newspapers have done recently.
"There are a lot of conflicting pressures on people's time and newspapers have got to demand their place in people's schedules," Mr. Crawley said. "The Globe is very comfortable with the direction we're going in, but the industry as a whole is not in a good situation."
