The Washington Post to go 'on the air'
The Washington Post is set to begin broadcasting its content on its own radio station in March of this year. The radio broadcasting will be like a 'long form' of the newspaper and will include news, interviews and phone-ins. Commentary from journalists outside the Post will also be included.
Leonard Downie Jr., executive editor at the Post, spoke about the new initiative: "It will allow us to do creative things on the radio that you can't do in print."
The Post is taking podcasting to another level, capitalizing on a product that has proved sucessful for newspapers, for example exclusive podcasts from Ricky Gervais offered on the Guardian website topped UK and US download charts in 2005.
Publisher Boisfeuillet Jones Jr. reveals that the paper hopes to boost readership through its planned radio initiative: "This is a wonderful opportunity for the Washington Post to encourage the radio audience to read more of the newspaper."
