The Observer: will re-design put the paper back on track?

Posted by Dominique Lewis Tuohy on January 6, 2006 at 4:55 PM

The Observer, Sunday paper of the Guardian Media Group, has planned a design re-launch for this Sunday 8, January. The Observer is the world's oldest Sunday paper, it has periodically suffered from financial trouble since the 1970s; editor Roger Alton believes the re-design will at least enable the title to break even this year. Lagging behind The Sunday Times' 1 million copies sold, at 400 000, The Observer is attempting to gain readers.

The 'new' Observer will have a Berliner format and will be full colour, new columns will be added, and each week four specialised magazines covering sport, music, food, and female interests, will supplement the paper. Observer Woman, the female interest magazine, is a new addition, while the other three magazines were previously each only published once a month.

Alton highlights a number of aspects of the' new' redesigned Observer that he believes will generate more revenue. Firstly, he says there are huge savings from using the Berliner printing presses the paper will now share with The Guardian.

He also focuses on advertising, he feels the advertising market will pick up this year with the football World Cup and The Observer will gain more revenue from premium paid colour advertising.

Correction: The Observer's four magazine supplements, Sport, Music, Food and Woman, will be published monthly on a rotating basis, here is the line up for the coming weeks: Observer Woman 15 January, Music Monthly 22 January, Food Monthly 29 January.
