Big news for researchers as
DocumentCloud, a consortium and repository of primary source documents, announced a partnership with
Thomson Reuters' high-volume text identification and tagging program
OpenCalais.
DocumentCloud offers accessibility and easy sharing of original source documents from across the web by allowing users to search thousands of documents for nearly any criteria (date, person, location, etc) and facilitates 'document dives,' the collaborative search of a large volume of files by a group of users. Over twenty high-profile news and investigative journalism organizations (listed below) have joined the project, promising to contribute primary source materials enabling the public to explore connections across news reporters' source documents.
As twenty of the
world's leading political figures convened at London's
Excel centre something unprecedented was happening in the media world -
with coverage going digital in a way never before seen.
What's more was that the key players providing the coverage were not
just your usual brigade of journalists but also consisted of
the general public who, by using social networking tools such as
Twitter,
provided an additional news element to this year's summit.
Editor and Publisher reports that the Reuters Foundation and the United Nations Development Programme have launched a Web site called “Voices of Iraq” that will enable Iraqi media outlets to combine their news coverage. Newspapers, magazines, and radio and TV stations can submit news items to the site and publish or broadcast items submitted by other contributors. News is currently presented in Arabic, with Kurdish and English language options to be added in coming months. Jo Weir from the Reuters Foundation explained the urgent need to improve the quality of news available to Iraqi media. Any new uncensored media that emerged since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003 have “struggled to report events in a country of 26 million people where insecurity makes it risky to move around and inadequate telephones hamper communication,” Weir said. The new site facilitates exchanges in information and provides training for Iraqi journalists. Paul Eedle, a former senior editor at Reuters, directs the project.
