France, Italy, Spain: The Huffington Post is expanding to Europe. After having launched editions in the UK and Canada last year, Arianna Huffington is now taking her news, blogging and aggregation site into continental Europe and non-Anglophone markets. 

As reported yesterday by the Wall Street Journal, the French edition "Le Huffington" will be launched on January 23, under the editorial direction of Anne Sinclair, a well-known TV journalist (and wife of the former head of the IMF Dominique Strauss-Kahn.)

It was announced today (via PrimaComunicazione) that HuffPost has also signed an agreementwith Gruppo Editoriale L'Espresso to land in Italy. 

Building an integrated newsroom might require some architectural upgrades. However, at the World Editors Forum session on "Integration: The latest experiments in a multi-platform age," several editors worldwide say an attitude change is the crucial factor.

"It's not a matter of age, but a matter of attitude," says Olalla Cernuda (left), head of online at ABC newspaper in Spain. Some of the younger journalists she has worked with wanted to write only for the printed paper, even though they were the ones expected to be tech-savvy.

Many employees, who were used to working for a very traditional paper, feared that they would see an uptick in work following integration. However, Cernuda says there hasn't been an increase, only adjustments in order to provide coverage 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

In January, the daily newspaper Kleine Zeitung in Austria launched the first weekly newspaper for children in Austria, called Kleine Kinderzeitung. By launch date, the paper already had 8,000 subscribers. The publication is targeted at 8- to 11-year-olds.

Thomas Götz, deputy editor-in-chief of Kleine Zeitung, says during the World Editors Forum, in a session about Innovations in Print, that the newspaper was launched for two simple reasons: to reach this critical audience at an early age to educate them about newspapers, but also to help out their reading skills along the way.

According to a national survey, he says youth's reading habits were troubling. "We felt we had a responsibility here to improve the reading skills of our kids - it was that simple," he says.

As digital media grows and print revenue shrinks, papers around the world are struggling to find ways to make online news pay. One of the most obvious - and most controversial - solutions has been the paywall. But getting people to pay for content is no easy task if they feel they can the same thing for free elsewhere.

From Twitter and Facebook, to crowdsourcing and gathering readers' photos, to community events: newspapers now have abundant ways to interact with their readers online. The World Editors Forum, to be held in Vienna from 12 to 15 October next, will focus on the new tools of social media to help editors build communities around their newspapers.

The annual conference, which runs concurrently to the World Newspaper Congress, will also offer a "Facebook for Journalists" workshop in which Facebook representatives will provide tips and advice on how Facebook can be better used by newsrooms, both to find sources and reach a larger audience.

The WEF session on building communities will feature Jim Brady, Head of Project Thunderdome, the Journal Register Company's initiative to engage audience and creating content across all platforms and geographies, Matthew Eltringham, Editor of the BBC College of Journalism website, Anette Novak, Editor-in-Chief of Norran in Sweden, and other speakers to be announced. 

As the toll of casualties from The News of the World scandal increases, the race is on for other publications, owned by various subsidiaries of the Murdoch media empire, to distance or rebrand themselves so as not to find themselves caught in the line of fire.   

Over the weekend yet more senior figures, from the worlds of journalism, politics and policing have been further embroiled in the scandal and have paid the price. Former head of News International Rebekah Brooks (who resigned from her post last week) was arrested and later released while Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson has resigned along with Les Hinton, C.E.O. of Dow Jones, who testified in British Parliamentary Inquiries in 2007 and 2009 attesting that phone hacking was the fault of one single reporter and not symptomatic of wider company policy.

Inevitably, the public is now seeking to establish not only exactly how widespread such unethical malpractice is within News Corp. and elsewhere, including British politics.

To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction - it seems that Newton's third law is as easily applicable to the media as it is to elementary physics. It is natural that in the aftermath of the News Corp. phone hacking scandal should prompt significant questions about press regulation across the globe. So, the industry is now lying in wait to see exactly what shape these reforms will take.

Even in Australia, Murdoch's birth place, questions have been prompted about the potential for a media review, as Prime Minister Julia Gillard admitted in a speech that recent revelations in Britain have prompted "considerations about the role of the media in our democracy".  There have also been calls for reviews of media legislation from the leader of the Australian Greens Party, Bob Brown. 

News Ltd., the Australian subsidiary of News Corp., has pre-empted any parliamentary inquiry by announcing an internal investigation into the possibility of similar malpractice. When questioned in an interview with Reuters , CEO and Chairman of News Ltd. John Hartigan claimed to be "Hugely confident that there is no improper or unethical behaviour in our newsrooms."

Guardian News & Media (GNM), the publisher of The Guardian, announced yesterday that it would become a "digital-first" organisation. Alan Rusbridger, editor-in-chief of GNM, and Andrew Miller, chief executive of Guardian Media Group (GMG), revealed outlines of a "major transformation programme", which would push operations at The Guardian "beyond the newspaper, shifting focus, effort and investment towards digital, because that is our future".

Miller described The Guardian's undertaking as "a major transformation that will see us change from a print-based organisation to one that is digital-first in philosophy and practice". The company said the new strategy was a response to challenges facing the whole media industry, which is seeing on the one hand a decline in print circulation and advertising revenues, but on the other, rapid growth in digital audiences.

The GMG chief also said that the newspaper and its sister publication The Observer had lost £33 million in cash terms last year. He warned that unless GMG changed its business operations, it could run out of cash in three to five years. The new strategy includes a plan to save £25 million over the next year. More importantly, the newspaper aims to double its digital revenues, which are expected to be at £47 million in the current financial year.

On Monday 6th at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco Steve Jobs himself presented the company's latest innovations.
Amongst these are iOS 5, the new Apple mobile operating system which brings over 200 new features, iCloud, the new online storage and syncing service for music, photos, files and software, and Newsstand, a virtual bookshelf which organizes magazine and newspapers' app subscription in just one folder.

Probably the most interesting feature from a publisher's point of view is Newsstand. Through this service, iOS 5 organizes users' magazine and newspaper app subscriptions in just one location that lets readers access their favourite publications quickly and easily.

The App Store will have a new place just for newspaper and magazine subscriptions, to which users can go directly from Newsstand. In the same way, new purchases will go directly to the newsstand folder. Then, as new issues become available, Newsstand automatically updates them in the background -- complete with the latest covers.

On Saturday May 14 Dominique Strauss-Kahn, head of the International Monetary Fund and until then the favoured Nicolas Sarkozy's challenger in the next presidential elections in France, was arrested in New York and charged with the sexual assault of a housekeeper in his suite at the Sofitel Hotel.

In addition to the consequences the case is having on international politics, international relations and French politics (Strauss-Kahn resigned on May 19 as head of IMF), it is also enlivening the debate within news media.

To sum up, of course simplifying, the French press is blaming the US media of being too unscrupulous in covering the news, neglecting the right to be considered innocent before being proved guilty. On the other hand, the US press is blaming the French press of being "reluctant" in covering the case in order to protect Dominique Strauss-Kahn's private life.

The Guardian announced yesterday that it would be winding down its Local project, started two years ago, over the next month or so. The initiative aimed to provide regional news through three blogs, dedicated to Edinburgh, Leeds and Cardiff. Each of the locations has a dedicated "beatblogger", combining traditional journalism with social media.

According to the statement, the project is "not sustainable in its present form" financially, despite strong editorial importance and engaged local readerships. Otherwise the initiative appears to have been a success: the announcement included a long list of examples of how the blogs have had real impact in the localities.

According to Press Gazette, a spokesperson for The Guardian said that significant further investment would be needed for the project to grow and develop. "The nature of digital innovation means investing in and trying new things, but also knowing when to call it a day," the spokesperson said.

What do the Nobel Committee, Google, a Tunisian novelist and a Mexican journalist on the front lines of a drug war all have in common? They all have contributed to a package of editorials, essays and other materials being offered to newspapers world-wide to commemorate World Press Freedom Day on 3 May.

The wide ranging editorial and advertising materials, provided to newspapers and other media for publication on or around 3 May, are offered free of charge by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA). Thousands of newspapers publish WAN-IFRA materials each year to remind readers of the central role a free press plays in democracy and in economic, cultural, social and political development.

Many Mexican news organizations have agreed a set of common guidelines in reporting the on-going drug war that is wounding the country.

The voluntary, self-policed guidelines are the first of their kind in Mexico, where more than 35,000 people, including at least 22 journalists, have been killed in drug-related violence since the government stepped up its offensive against cartels in late 2006, the Associated Press (via Yahoo! News) reported.

As recently reported, Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries for journalists' work and news organizations are facing hard challenges for the risks run in reporting the violence and the war triggered by drug cartels. 

Growing concern over advertising market pressure threatening editorial integrity came to a head at The Detroit News last week. Controversy has sparked over its decision to change a review on the new Chrysler 200. Auto critic Scott Burgess resigned after his changed review appeared online, reported Jalopnik, who broke the story.

A local dealer took issue with Burgess' comparisons to "a dog" and "a loggerhead turtle," according to USA Today. Although it was too late to change the print version, the online version was reposted. After negative feedback from the repost, editors have put the original back up and issued an apology for their actions.

Is the line between advertising market pressure and editorial integrity becoming thinner?
Within the crisis much of the press is facing, being able to attract more advertising can be a critical factor in a publication's survival. And branded, or 'advertorial' content has become more popular: content published in the layout of an article. It is vital, when using this, however, to maintain editorial integrity.

As Journalism.co.uk reported, the Association of Online Publishers has taken an interest in how media outlets can take advantage of branded content without losing readers' trust and held a conference entitled "Maintaining editorial integrity and making partnerships pay" on February 17th in London. 

Krishna Bharat, the founder and engineering head of Google News, recently said that the computer-generated aggregated news site is expanding its customization options for non-English readers, the Japan Times Online reported.

The article reported Bharat said in an interview he expects the site's news personalization and other features to become more widely available for non-English readers, including Japanese, sometimes this year.

"Google currently offers more extensive options for English readers to personalize their news site by enabling them to create sections that cluster together stories closely matching their interests", Japan Times underlined. 

A great debate over media concentration has been taking place in the UK as News Corp bids to buy BSkyB, whose properties include 24-hour news channel Sky News. News Corp already owns 39% of BSkyB, more commonly referred to as Sky, and there has been much opposition to allowing the purchase of the remainder of the company.

News Corp, via its subsidiary News International, owns The Times, The Sunday Times, The Sun and The News of the World, which account for about 37% of the national newspaper market. Sky is the UK's largest pay TV platform, reaching one third of all homes. As well as news, it focuses on sports, films and entertainment. It also has a significant radio news presence. Combined, News Corp and BSkyB would have a turnover of £7.5bn, compared to the BBC's £4.8bn. 

Details are emerging about News Corp's forthcoming tablet newspaper, The Daily. News Corp has spent the last three months putting together a newsroom that will soon be 100-strong, said WWD's John Koblin. The Daily will launch in beta around Christmas and will be offered to the public in early 2011, on the iPad and other tablet devices.

Koblin's sources said that the new paper will aim to have "a tabloid sensibility with a broadsheet intelligence." The editorial page is expected to have "a sort of optimistic, populist stance," he said

The staff are already at work in the News Corp building on Sixth Avenue in New York, though will move floors once their office is ready. There will be no foreign bureaux - The Daily will be covering the US only - and as yet there are no plans for a DC bureau, Koblin said, although politics will be covered.
