UK: Guardian and Observer to merge sections

The Guardian and its sister Sunday title, The Observer, are conducting staff exercises to merge sections, in an effort to produce 24/7 online news delivery. This may also explain why Observer editor Roger Alton resigned on Wednesday.

According to Roy Greenslade, media commentator for the Guardian, “it is obvious that it (integration) cannot possibly work - not least in terms of budgets - unless there is greater co-ordination between the titles.” This is why 250 staffers so far have been involved in exercises to adapt to the papers’ new online policies.

“One consequence will be the merging across titles, and across platforms, of various sections, such as sport, business and foreign news,” said Greenslade.

This is partly why Alton resigned. The Telegraph titles have faced similar tensions, as Sunday Telegraph editor Patience Wheatcroft resigned last month.

In September, Guardian Media Group CEO Carolyn McCall had told paidcontent.co.uk that the Guardian’s print edition and website were to become “indivisible” and share a single editorial budget. She had also suggested the integration of sports, news and foreign desks.
