AOL wants to hire a new advertising agency to promote consumers perceptions of its brand and remind them "why people should care about AOL again". AdAge writes that AOL is hoping to select an agency at the beginning of next month.

Poynter reports that Steve Buttry, director of community engagement at the Journal Register Company and Matt DeRienzo, group editor of the JRC's Connecticut papers, have set a quiz for staff to check that they properly understand the ethics of linking and attribution. Employees who got any of the answers wrong will have to take part in a training session about plagiarism.

Broadcasting & Cable writes that, for the first time, NBC intends to launch a documentary series on an iPad app . The series, Hidden Planet, will at first be made exclusively available on the app, and will then be released on RockCenterNBC.com a week later.

GigaOm argues that giving away content on the web for free was not news organisations' version of original sin.

French journalists were detained by military in Jos, Nigeria, and then kicked out of the state, the Associated Press reported.

The conference "The Media World after WikiLeaks and News of the World" aims to gather leading media representatives, professional and "citizen" journalists and media law experts to exchange views on these issues and to discuss good practices in traditional professional journalism and citizen journalism in the digital era.

With a stunning 2 billion persons estimated to be using the Internet and producing 156 million public blogs in 2011, there has been a surge of social networks, user-generated content and micro-blogging that has enabled all Internet users to become public communicators. Along with the spread of the Internet, WikiLeaks' release of a massive number of classified government documents and its initial collaboration with traditional news media has modified the media landscape and raised crucial questions for journalism.

In the UK, journalists at Thompson Reuters have voted to strike for the first time in over 25 years in response to a below-inflation pay offer. Journalists will strike for 48 hours next week, just as Thompson Reuters publishes its full year financial results, reports The Guardian.

Africa Times News reported that the first African tablet device, which was presented at the Africa Web Summit in September 2011, has been launched in Congo on January 30. Way-C, which means "starlight" ("lumière des étoiles") in a North Congolese dialect, is the first in the history of these new technologies on the continent, the article says.

Zimbabwe's media commission said on February 2 that it will ask authorities to ban foreign newspapers that are not registered to operate in the country, news24 reported. Commission chair Godfrey Majonga singled out South Africa's Sunday Times newspaper as having failed to comply with the rules, which require all journalists working in the country to obtain accreditation from the commission, the article said.

China and India gaining prominence in international newspapers

Starting from the current issue The Economist will have a weekly section devoted to China, the paper's leader announced.

This is the first time since 1942, when the a US section was introduced, that the news magazine is dedicating an entire section to a single country, the article explained. Thematic sections and blogs as well as specific columns are usually focused on a geographical area, as Banyan, the blog dedicated to Asia, which takes its name from the Banyan tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment and Gujarati merchants used to conduct business.

The name for China blog has not yet been decided and the paper invited readers to send suggestions. It will ideally need to agree with the style and 19th-century origins of the other sections and columns names, from Bagehot, the column dedicated to Britain, which takes its name from Walter Bagehot, British constitutional expert and early editor of The Economist, to Baobab, the section focused on Africa and Middle East which owes its name to the African tree.

Europa: six European titles team up to investigate European identity

Six countries, six leading newspapers, a huge audience and one common theme: Europe, how to explain it better, how to understand it better, how to build it better. This is the aim of an editorial project which saw six papers joining forces to produce a joint special edition on the situation of the European Union.

"The state of the Union", echoing the State of the union speech US President Obama gave on 24 January, is the angle of the first issue of Europa (more will be expected in future) produced by El Pais, the Guardian, Le Monde, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Gazeta Wyborcza and La Stampa.

This joint special editorial supplement aims to give a "more nuanced picture of the EU and explore what Europe does well and what not so well", as the Guardian explained.

First Woman to Head Global Organisation of World's Editors

Cherilyn Ireton, a South African editor and successful senior manager at some of the country's top newspapers, has been appointed Executive Director of the World Editors Forum, the global organisation for editors within the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA).

Ms Ireton is the first woman to head the organisation, which was created in 1994 as a unique global network for exchanging ideas on newsroom management, editorial quality, online strategies and press freedom issues. What newspapers have to learn from magazines

The future of the newspaper is in magazines, believes Jacek Utko, design director for Bonnier Business Press, which publishes newspapers in eight Central European countries. This is a trend that news organisations should embrace rather than fight, he added, speaking at the 5th Arab Free Press Forum in Tunis.

Print is still a highly relevant medium, Utko said, and publishers are increasingly realizing this as they have been disappointed by tablets as audience- and revenue-generators.

However, the print model at many news organisations - publishing website content the following day and charging for it - does not make sense, Utko claims. It is necessary to offer more than that if you want people to willingly pay for the product.

Public concern has been raised over media laws restricting freedom of the press in Hungary and South Africa, but less attention has been devoted to the worsening situation in Ecuador, where the news media are now under attack, writes George Brock, Professor and Head of Journalism at City University London, on his blog.

On January 24, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) published a report that illustrates how the government of Ecuador is carrying out "a sophisticated strategy of marginalising all voices independent of state power".

A survey reported by The Guardian today suggests that almost 70% of the British population distrust tabloid newspapers. However, Roy Greenslade argues that the question of trust it irrelevant for many tabloid readers, who are looking for entertainment, not information.

Everyone on Facebook will soon be getting Timeline, writes Techcrunch. The social network's new look is already available for those who want to opt in voluntarily, but it will be unrolled for all users in the next couple weeks.

Press release: despite 'Arab Spring,' media still under threat in Middle East

Press freedom and freedom of expression remain under serious threat in the Middle East, despite the democracy revolutions and reforms that are sweeping the region, a panel of experts said Tuesday at the Arab Free Press Forum in Tunisia.

"The problem today is that you might not be afraid of the secret police, but you might fear the moral police," said Ghias al-Jundi, the Syrian Director of the PEN International Writers in Prison Committee and a member of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange's (IFEX) Tunisia Monitoring Group.

While the dramatic democratic upheavals "have made steps in overcoming power and overcoming the kingdom of fear," the Islamist groups who were long barred from politics and are now emerging do not have a tradition of political interaction with other groups.

NBCUniversal is getting into the eBook market. Digital Book World announced today that the media company is launching a publishing unit to make the most of the boom in tablet and eReader ownership.

The New York Times is working on a project called Deep Dive to allow readers to follow specific topics through the news. Nieman Lab reports that the Deep Dive uses meta data to find connections between articles and bring users the most relevant results.

Newspapers in Kentucky have launched a scheme to allow state radio to use their content, writes Kentucky.com.

The Chicago Sun Times has published an editorial explaining why it will no longer endorse political candidates: "As many of you have told us, you can make up your own mind, thank you very much."

Press release: Arab Free Press Forum opens with call for more gains

The 5th Arab Free Press Forum opened Monday in Tunisia with a celebration of the gains that have been made in Middle East press freedom, but with a reminder that much more needs to be done.

"If Tunisia is the country in the region that has most advanced in the construction of democracy, other countries in the region are still suffering under the yoke of authoritarianism," said Moroccan journalist Aboubakr Jamai, opening the conference on behalf of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA). "Reporters thus face different situations. Some have won -- like their fellow citizens -- their freedom of speech, while others continue to risk their freedom and even their lives."

"Some are more advanced than others in constructing democratic society, but if the level of democritization differ, there is little doubt about the dynamics that have begun in our societies," said Mr Jamai, laureate of WAN-IFRA's Gebran Tueni Award. "There is a sense of history, one that leads to respect for liberty and dignity."

British-based Pearson, whose holdings include the Penguin Group and the Financial Times Group made $3 billion (£2 billion) in digital revenues last year, reports Paid Content.

Globe and Mail appoints its first public editor to boost its credibility

The Globe and Mail, Canada's largest newspaper, has announced the appointment of its first ombudsman.

As Craig Silverman reported for Poynter, citing an internal memo from the paper's editor-in-chief John Stackhouse, Sylvia Stead will be the first Globe and Mail public editor, starting on January 23rd.

Stead is currently an associate editor and has been with the paper for many years, serving in a variety of roles from national to executive editor.

"The creation of this position is a major step for the Globe to make us more transparent and accountable to our readers, and to continue to build our most important asset -- credibility -- in the Canadian market," Stackhouse wrote in the memo reported by Poynter.

Archant brings reader involvement into local coverage with Citizenside

UK regional publisher Archant and citizen journalism photo news agency Citizenside have teamed up to launch iwitness24, a community news platform which will help "to bring the locals back to local news", a press release announced today.

Archant readers, divided into 7 regional sub-communities, can contribute content through the website - accessible through a one-click sign in with Facebook Connect - or the iPhone and the Android applications. This allows them to share geotagged photos, videos, and text articles directly with their local newsrooms.

The initiative, which uses Citizenside's Reporter Kit technology, aims to allow Archant to more effectively engage with its readers and foster the power of its local communities.

The groundbreaking Women in News (WIN) programme, launched by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) in 2010, is now accepting applications from women media professionals from either the business or editorial side of newspapers in Botswana, Namibia and Zambia.

WIN is a high-impact capacity building programme that equips participants with the skills, strategies and support networks to progress to leading roles within their news organisations.

To date, almost 50 percent of the women enrolled in the programme have progressed to higher levels of responsibility within their organisations, or made a lateral move of their choosing.

"WIN has given me my professional vision. It has given me my educational vision. And it has given me growth. The bottom line is growth," says Leatile Gaolape, HR Coordinator for The Guardian Sun in Botswana. "I've realized that I am now capable of being a leader, I feel more responsible and I have learned to come up with solutions."

The "Truth vigilante" debate: an obvious question or a challenging discussion?

On January 12 Arthur Brisbane, the New York Times Public Editor wrote a post on his blog entitled "Should The Times Be a Truth Vigilante?"

"I'm looking for reader input on whether and when New York Times news reporters should challenge "facts" that are asserted by newsmakers they write about," he continued.

The community promptly reacted and the debate grew fast. Tweets gathered and readers, journalists and media commentators flooded the web with comments. Often sarcastic comments.

Even the New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson answered in a note that Brisbane appended to the update of the blog-post he wrote to clarify his original question.

News organisations are currently only getting about 12.5% of online video ads, reports Poynter. Rick Edmonds asks, what has gone wrong?

The European newspaper publisher Mecom saw its profits fall by €5m in the second half of 2011, compared to the same period the previous year, reports The Guardian. Still, the decline is not as bad as the company predicted in October 2011.

Tindle Newspapers has bought up two local lifestyle magazines: Life in Petersfield and Life in Haslemere. Hold The Front Page writes that the UK regional publisher claims to have launched 21 new titles since the recession began.

Election year: newspapers prepare for the big stories

2012 is presidential election year in the US and election fever has already started.
Starting with the caucases, continuing with the primaries and with their eyes already on the presidential race ending in November 2012, newspapers are getting ready.

"Election coverage is bigger than any one newsroom" so the right approach should be teaming up to be able to assure the coverage is as wide and accurate as possible, some believe. Or at least this is what NBC News and Newsweek/Daily Beast have decided to do in view of the upcoming presidential battle. Shared content will appear on the Newsweek pages and online on The Daily Beast.

The decision isn't surprising in itself, Justin Ellis wrote on NiemanLab. Double the resources, double the coverage, double the audience. Also, he explains, looking back to past electoral experience, this is not even new, quoting as examples the Times and CBS News or ABC News and The Washington Post partnering on polls.

NewsRight: US companies come together to monitorize their online content

Twenty-nine US news organizations launched yesterday, January 5, NewsRight, a digital content licensing organization. Amongst the affiliates are the Associated Press, the New York Times Co, Hearst Newspapers and the Washington Post Co.

The aim is to keep track of newspapers' content as it moves around the web in order to license and profit from it. It "will measure the unpaid online use of their original reporting and seek to convert unauthorized websites, blogs and other newsgathering services into paying customers", AP (via the Washington Post) reported.

NewsRight is an evolution of the News Registry, a project started in October 2010 by AP and some partners.

Press release: World's most dangerous region for journalists: the Arab World

Repression of uprisings makes the region the world's most dangerous place for journalists.

Sixty-four journalists and other media workers were killed world-wide because of their professional activities in 2011, with nearly half of them killed in Pakistan, Iraq, Libya and Yemen, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) said Thursday.

Ten journalists were killed in Pakistan for the second consecutive year, making it again the most deadly country for journalists.

The Arab region was the world's most dangerous region for media professionals, with twenty-two journalists killed. The brutal repression that followed widespread popular uprisings in Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen cost the lives of sixteen journalists. Journalism in Iraq remains a dangerous profession, as six journalists lost their lives in the country last year.

After having gained predominance in the Anglo-Saxon world, data journalism is gaining ground in France too and Liberation looks at what to expect for 2012. Mainstream newspapers are still a bit overcautious as the most active in a regular use of data journalism is the news site Owni, the article noted.

The Wikimedia Foundation, which mantains the online free and open-edited encyclopedia Wikipedia, raised $20 million in donations, Reuters reported, establishing a record after the $16 million raised last year.

News Corp launched online an archive website which offers paying access to the Sun and the now-defunct News of the World, paidContent reported. Will this be a first step toward the creation of a paywall for the Sun?

A defence of British tabloids

At a time when the conduct and the ethics of the red-top press (and others) is under the lens of the Leveson inquiry, the British press is defending tabloids in the wake of the conviction of two of Stephen Lawrence's killers.

The Guardian published an editorial - taken up by PressGazette's blog - which praised the Daily Mail for its coverage (entirerly summerized by the Mail itself here), starting from the famous page one accusation back in 1997. "It did not simply keep the case in the public eye. It also became a national reprimand to the criminal justice and political system in a wider sense", the editorial said.

"The Daily Mail deserves credit for its courageous campaign", the Financial Times underlighted.

State subsidy cuts in Italy: a threat to pluralism or a rational reorganization?

Some Italian newspapers could be at risk due to the cuts in state subsidies that the new technocrat government is planning to implement.

The Financial Times reported last week that about 100 titles are facing closure as Mario Monti's administration confirmed cuts in public subsidies for the press from €170m to €53m budgeted for next year. These had already been proposed by the previous government led by Silvio Berlusconi.

At risk are wellknown papers such the leftwing Liberazione, Il Manifesto and L'Unità, the former communist party daily founded by Antonio Gramsci in 1924 and the Catholic daily Avvenire.

Hacking by private investigators extends to email accounts

Newspapers in the UK commissioned private detectives to hack email accounts as well as phones, it emerged yesterday. The Independent reported that police have uncovered evidence that Gordon Brown's emails were accessed illegally during his time as Chancellor of the Exchequer, as well as those of a former Labour adviser Derek Draper.

"Several Fleet Street titles" may have commissioned private detectives to access emails of as many victims as those involved in the phone-hacking scandal, the Independent said. Peter Hain, former Northern Ireland secretary, has confirmed that he has been in discussions with police concerning hacking of his emails.
