About the guest speakers:

The News Media Coalition (NMC), with headquarters in London and Brussels, seeks to preserve the function and ability of news organisations to inform public society about major events of interest.
Moger is one of the leading architects of the campaigning global network which seeks to protect the press freedom interests of journalists, editors and publishers in the contentious area of sport and other major news events. Before taking up this consultancy role, he was a journalist and executive editor for national newspapers in the United Kingdom, including The Times of London.

The sport daily Marca, one of the founder members of the IASN, has a readership of over 2,300,000, the highest in Spain for a daily newspaper and more than half of sports readership.
Marca is also Marca.com, the most visited sports website in Spain, with over 3 million users a month, and a 24-hour/day radio station, Radio Marca.
Gallardo, who started his journalistic career at Antena 3 and Radio 80, has been with Marca since 1991, with responsibilities covering virtually all the departments of the newspaper. He has co-ordinated and directed the supplement collection Tesoros del Real Madrid, one of the most remarkable successes in the history of the newspaper.
He has implemented Plusmarca, a project pioneering the delivery of information on mobiles in Europe.
Gallardo is also a writer. He is the author, among other works, of a biography of Maradona, the book Historias de una ilusión, dedicated to Spain's football team, and El Deporte Rey.

Scotland: Edinburgh Herald & Post relaunches

The free weekly newspaper in Edinburgh will relaunch next week with a greater focus on shopping and local listings, All Media Scotland reports.

The new-look Edinburgh Herald & Post, produced by The Scotsman's publishers, is expected to focus on the shopping and services sector in the city with consumer news and features. It will also include local listings and a picture gallery to focus on community events. The newspaper will be distributed free to households across Edinburgh from Thursday.

Newspaper liveblogs local council meetings

A newspaper in Manchester has been using various multimedia tools to liveblog council meetings from across the Greater Manchester Area, Press Gazette reports.

Meetings of the local authorities are attended by a reporter from the Manchester Evening News (MEN) or one of its sister weekly publications. Reporters then use Twitter to file updates minute-by-minute. Their updates are then streamed on MEN websites using CoverItLive technology, which allows liveblogging and other forms of real-time updating.

The MEN has so far used this to report on meetings of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities and the Greater Manchester Police Authority. The newspaper wants to extend the service so that it can cover every full meeting held by ten local authorities across Greater Manchester.

ProPublica investigates politicians' Super Bowl fundraising

Non-profit investigative journalism outfit ProPublica is taking advantage of the Super Bowl to dig into the fundraising efforts of politicians, Poynter Online reports.

Reporter Marcus Stern planned to use the football game, held yesterday, to spot members of Congress who were attending and figure out how they obtained their tickets. But since he knew that trying to contact 535 members of Congress would be too big a task for one person, he turned the investigation into a crowdsourcing effort and asked professional journalists and the public to help collaborate.

"To some extent, this is going to be a test of the privacy or the openness of members of Congress when it comes to fundraising," Stern told Poynter Online.

iPad changes the story for newspaper-subsidized e-readers

The launch of Apple's iPad has garnered much optimism in the newspaper industry, driving hopes that the innovative tablet computer will be able to breathe some new life into an industry battered by an advertising downturn.

Much speculation has placed very high hopes on the capacity of the iPad and a slew of new generation e-readers to revamp the industry and bolster its business model. But, as Poynter Online's Bill Mitchell reports, the iPad will probably not be the solution to all of the newspapers' woes, but this sleek electronic device could play a substantial role in the migration of users from a cost-heavy past to a more efficient future.

Facebook emerges as threat to Google News

Facebook is rivaling Google News and Google Reader as a distributor of news content on the internet, according to recent data from Hitwise.

Hitwise online analyst Heather Hopkins reports that Google Reader accounted for .01% of visits to news and information websites in late January - roughly the same figure as a year ago. Meanwhile, Google News accounted for 1.39% of upstream visits and Facebook for 3.52%.

Guardian's Zeitgeist tracks 'social signals' from readers

The Guardian is developing a new feature for its website, Zeitgeist, which organizes content into trends based on the attention of users. Instead of tracking articles by the number of page views, Zeitgeist analyzes the 'social signals' or behavior of visitors to Guardian.co.uk by looking at the websites they come from, the sites they visit after, the amount of time spent on each page, and which stories they post on social networking sites.

The data for each story is then analyzed together for a value of "Zeitgeistiness." Stories that attract more attention than normal are then posted on the Zeitgeist page in color-coded blocks according to the section in which they first appeared in the Guardian, making it easier for readers to notice trends throughout the week. Each article is only compared to others published on the same day in the same section.

iCurrent: Can personalised news help newspapers?

The iPad isn't the key to monetising news online, opines journalist and consultant Steve Outing in a new post on his blog, but personalisation might be.

He suggests that he will be no more likely to pay to read news websites on the iPad than on his computer. Since he reads many different news sources, he finds that there is too much news to pay for all of it, and highlights the importance of personalisation beyond iGoogle or Twitter feeds amid all this choice.

In this context, he compares the personalised web news service iCurrent, still in beta, to the personalised music service Pandora, which offers similar music to songs and artists that the user already likes. It learns more about what users enjoy as they click thumbs-up or thumbs-down on different songs.

Update: More time to bid for Canwest

Potential bidders for the newspaper properties of Canwest will have an extra week to make their offers, under a ruling by an Ontario court, Reuters reports.

Parties interested in purchasing well-known Canadian newspapers including the National Post, Montreal Gazette and Vancouver Sun now have until 5 March to offer their bids. These will need to top a C$925 million offer made by Canwest's lenders.

Former editor takes on Birmingham Post with web launch

This week, independent regional business news website, TheBusinessDesk, launched a third regional edition in Birmingham today with Marc Reeves as its new editor, Press Gazette reports.

Reeves, the former editor of the business and public affairs daily, the Birmingham Post, left the newspaper in January after it was turned into a weekly. His new position will place him in direct competition with his old paper.

Twitter and Facebook to boost news organisations' ad revenue?

The past few years has seen the explosive growth of social networking sites Twitter and Facebook, and a dramatic downturn in advertising revenue that has set about ravaging the newspaper industry. PoynterOnline has now reported new enterprises between the two industries however, which could prove profitable for both.

Few news outlets are without their own Twitter account these days, using the site's micro-blogging capabilities as a means to distribute stories and attract a wider audience. The Austin American-Statesman is using theirs to sell tweets to local business, which can advertise their enterprises on the newspaper's Twitter account.

Washington Post may launch local business publication

The Washington Post may be looking into providing readers with more news and information on local business. A source told the Washington City Paper that the Post is planning to launch a business publication called Capital Business, which would be issued weekly and cost US$1.99 per week.

This comes less than a year after the Post shuttered its daily business section to "save on newsprint - an important objective in these times." However, the Business Insider pointed out today that the prototype sent out to subscribers for their input is in print, not online.

Financial Times appoints new US staff

The British international business newspaper the Financial Times (FT) has announced several appointments to its US staff, Editor and Publisher has reported.

The new staff are in the coverage areas of business, finance and markets, and will report to the US finance and business editor Francesco Guerrera.

The Texas Tribune: where the money's coming from

How do non-profit news organisations pay their bills? The Texas Tribune had a fundraising goal for 2009 of $3.5 million, and managed to end the year with close to $4 million. In a note on the Tribune's website, chairman John Thornton has explained where the money is coming from.

First, it's helpful if the co-founder has deep pockets, or if someone else who does is prepared to chip in. Thornton and his wife contributed $1 million to the Tribune, and financier T. Boone Pickens has donated $150,000. Foundations have also helped out to the tune of around $1.1 million, including a total of $750,000 in grants from the Houston Endowment and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Gawker examines Huffington Post Investigative Fund

The Huffington Post has benefited the most from the work of the Huffington Post Investigative Fund, according to John Cook of Gawker.com.

The Huffington Post Investigative Fund was founded as a non-profit independent journalism venture in March of 2009. Affiliated with and partly funded by Ariana Huffington's news website, it pledges to investigate "abuse, fraud or waste in government, business, and other institutions." The fund is also supported through tax-exempt donations from the Schumann Center for Media and Democracy and the Atlantic Philanthropies. All of its content is available to publishers for free through a creative commons license.

Federal Communications Commission announces probe into media's future

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has launched an initiative to examine the future of media in the digital age and to "help ensure that all Americans have access to vibrant, diverse sources of news and information that will enable them to enrich their families, communities and democracy."

"The Future of Media and the Information Needs of Communities in a Digital Age" lists 42 questions the project is seeking to answer through research and asking for input from the public. Submissions for the project closes March 8. Quoting the Knight Commission on the Information Needs of Communities in a Democracy, the project states that the "digital age is creating an information and communications renaissance. But it is not serving all Americans and their local communities equally. It is not yet serving democracy fully," according to the Huffington Post.

MediaNews Group files for bankruptcy

The holding company for MediaNews Group, publisher of The Denver Post, San Jose Mercury News and 52 other daily publications, has filed for bankruptcy, Editor and Publisher reports.

Affiliated Media Inc., the privately held parent company for the publisher, expects to emerge from bankruptcy in one or two months. It has said that it has a deal with creditors to reduce its $930 million debt to $165 million. Lenders including Bank of America would get most of the company's stock, wiping out shareholders such as Hearst Corp. A bankruptcy court in Delaware still has to approve the plan.

New government data search website launched

The Guardian has launched a new data search website, allowing readers to search government data from the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand.

After these different governments made their statistics available on individual websites, The Guardian has collected them in one place, at their new World Government Data website. This enables users to not only search the information, but also collect similar datasets from around the world, and find the best dataset by ranking them.

The more tech-savvy users will be able to transform the data into visualisations, mash-ups and apps. The websites invites users to post such creations.

Journalists hindering Haiti relief?

Journalists might be doing more harm than good in Haiti, suggests Noam Scheiber in a polemical piece published yesterday in the New Republic. While many journalists initially struggled to get to Haiti amid the chaos, nearly all major news outlets have a presence in Port-au-Prince by now. The New York Times and Washington Post each have ten staff in the country, not to mention CNN and CBS with their fifty-person production crews.

In some ways, he feels the mere presence of the media is hindering the rescue efforts they came to report. An excess of news staff puts an unfair burden on the country's already meager resources, with reporters "mooching off supplies intended for earthquake victims." On top of that, he dismisses the bulk of the news reported back as "redundant."

Is the changing role of copy editors behind typo-strewn Washington Post?

Tom Boswell's usually revered sports column fuelled a not insignificant number of outcries from WaPo's most fastidious readers back in November, when it graced the publication's website littered with errors and typos. At the time the Post's ombudsman, Andrew Alexander, explained such occurrences as an undesirable side effect of tighter deadlines and fewer copy editors, after recent jobs cuts and a total of four buyouts since 2003.

But despite complaints from agitated readers, Boswell's typo strewn offering has been by no means an isolated case, and eagle eyed grammarians have been quick to point other errors as and when. Many ask pertinent questions, such as Phillip K. Cohen: "If they don't care about basics like grammar and spelling, how much do they care about factual accuracy?"

Canada: Have bankrupt newspapers found a buyer?

At least some of the bankrupt newspapers owned by Canwest may have found a buyer, Editor and Publisher reports. A group of investors is preparing bids for three of the largest dailies: The National Post, The Montreal Gazette and The Ottawa Citizen.

The consortium includes Beryl Wajsman, editor of Quebec's largest English-language weekly, The Suburban; Raymond Heard, a former Montreal Star managing editor and former editor of the London Observer News Service; and Jerry S. Grafstein, a former Canadian senator and founder of the Toronto television station CITY-TV.

Washington Post and Hindustan Times to share content

News and reviews from the Washington Post are now published in the Hindustan Times, under a content-sharing agreement reached by the two organisations.

The Hindustan Times, the second-most read English language newspaper in India, will publish a special section with the stories from the Post. It will include reports from the paper's global bureaux, opinion pieces, book reviews and columnists. The option is also available to share content from the Post's magazine, Newsweek.

Are Non-Profits the Future of Investigate Reporting?

Non-profit investigative news groups have been encountering many of the same financial difficulties as the newspapers they have been working with, according to the AP's Andrew Vanacore.

As newsrooms cut costs and staff, investigative non-profit groups like the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) have picked up where they left off, or more appropriately, what they left out. Charitable foundations and philanthropists have pumped tens of millions of dollars into these non-profit watchdogs to investigate issues like corruption and the environment, which some newsrooms lack the resources to cover.
