Social networking still untapped by newspapers

While social networking seems like a viable prospect, newspapers have yet to unleash its power. And while USA Today’s website relaunch fails to attract more readers, social networking sites are earning points on the mobile market.
The numbers provided by Compete.com (saying USAToday.com has lost 29% in traffic since its relaunch – Comscore reveals a 14% drop) are controversial, and USA Today has issued a press release to disclaim them. In any case though, newspapers haven’t quite figured out how to reap the benefits from social networks traffic-driving abilities.

TechCrunch concludes that “perhaps news and social networking just don’t mix.” Let’s say they don’t mix quite yet.

Meanwhile, MySpace and Facebook are quickly expanding on mobile platforms, with respectively 3.7 and 2 million monthly users in July in the US.

‘Only’ 3.5 % of all US mobile subscribers accessed social networks via their mobiles, but this is just the beginning.

Says Mark Donovan, senior analyst, M:Metrics: “With the mobile phone playing a central role in people's social lives, it's only natural that social networking sites are working to bridge the gap between the online and mobile worlds."
