Lippo Group, a substantial Indonesian conglomerate, announces the launch of The Jakarta Globe, an English language daily newspaper that will be available both in print and online.

Bhimanto Suwastoyo, who worked with the AFP for over 20 years, is to be the paper's deputy editor. The editorial team also includes Ahmad Pathoni, who previously held senior positions at both AFP and Reuters, and A. Lin Neumann, former executive editor of the Hong Kong Standard and editor-in-chief of South Korean daily JoongAng.

The Globe will be released in the next two months and will be aimed at both Indonesians and expatriates. It will receive funding through advertisements and subscriptions.

The paper intends to be in competition with The Jakarta Post, Indonesia's prominent English-language paper.

Trinity Mirror announced it is developing a mobile site for two national papers, including the Daily Mirror and the Daily Record and 12 regional newspapers.

Each publication will have a print version, an online edition and a mobile site, which shows that the newspaper industry is a "growing multiplatform media business", according to Rick Gleave, head of Trinity Mirror interactive and mobile.

Nokia and Bluestar mobile (responsible for New York Post's site launch) helped develop the sites.

Regional newspapers to have their sites developed include the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, the Newcastle Journal, the Teeside Evening Gazette, the Liverpool Daily Post, Liverpool Echo, the Huddersfield Examiner, the Daily Post Wales, the Western Mail, the South Wales Echo, the Birmingham Mail, the Birmingham Post, and the Coventry Telegraph.

Layout

The new Mail website has some unwieldy designs, Belam says. First, a "skyscraper advert" lining the left side of the page results in a squeezed format that is hard to read. More noticeably, the home page is a colossal 6,369 pixels long - 10 pages of scrolling.

Finally, Belam is bewildered by the 140 links jamming the Mail's homepage. He believes that the Mail may have gotten overzealous with its coverage, leaving "designers with little choice but to include everything, to the detriment of the overall user experience."

RSS Feeds

The Mail has created RSS feeds for individual celebrities - an innovation, Belam says, that demonstrates "a real understanding of the strengths of the RSS format."

Navigation

Belam is a fan of the Mail's new interactive section, Coffee Break, which offers browsers games, crossword puzzles, and cartoons.

Message Boards

Belam likes the message board's "very graphical" front-page. He has mixed feelings, however, about the Mail's decision to display individual threads with the most recent post first. He says the ordering is "a very brave design decision" but warns that it can be "a very jarring experience the first time."

Hovering Preview

This feature, which displays the preview of a story when a mouse is rolled over it, was removed after the initial launch. Belam says it "caused more usability problems than it solved."

In a blog posting Monday, Lee Abrams, Tribune Co.'s chief innovation officer, says that newspapers have to find "a zone that balances intelligent with the ability to engage the masses in 2008." Abrams offers feedback on the Baltimore Sun and Orlando Sentinel's re-launches.

Here are some of his comments and suggestions pertaining to the Sun's re-launch:

*Crime coverage: Abrams says the Sun is "honoring the importance of crime" by "owning it via a single compartmentalized daily page."

*Numbering national stories: The Sun began labeling its national news stories in order of importance from one to ten. Abrams raves that the numbering system is "a whole new and modern way of prioritizing for the reader."

*Reduce Jumps: Abrams says newspapers, when possible, should restrict stories to one place. "I've never heard of a single person that liked jumps."

The Sentinel's re-launch:

*Web Push: Abrams says the Sentinel should be more creative and proactive luring readers to the website. Current "web pushers" are "kinda throwaway," he says.

*Numbers: More local statistics, Abrams says, and more numbers in general: "Consistency is what'll create 'trademarks'"

*Maps: Abrams says the Sentinel should be "using maps in all news sections to show another way to 'see' the news."

Abram's counseling has drawn the ire of some newspaper experts who shudder at his crude writing style - lackadaisical grammar, errant capitalization - and resent some of his more philistine suggestions, like adding front-page cartoons and trimming the fine arts sections.

But regardless of whether experts find merit in Abrams' suggestions, they should admire his tenacious optimism.

"Intelligence and engaging the mainstream - doable," Abrams writes," But [it] needs the re-think and execution...every day, every page..."

The Trinity Mirror, which publishes over 150 regional newspapers, announced that it has launched 20 channels on YouTube, each branded to one of the company's newspaper holdings.

"We've got 20 live at the moment, but we are launching new sites all the time. Every new site that we launch, we set up the functionality [to automatically upload videos] and encourage them to use it," explained Jessica Healy, online marketing manager for Trinity Mirror Regionals.

"It's very much in its infancy but the aim is that every video we put up on our sites will be put into YouTube," she continued.

Since May, Trinity has launched channels first for the Liverpool Daily Post, followed by the Liverpool Echo, Huddersfield Examiner and Teesside Gazette.

Trinity's expanded online offerings may be in response to the BBC's recent £800,000 proposal to expand local video coverage, which many regional news sites have vehemently criticized, feeling the plan encroaches on their niche.

Patrick Goldstein, author of the L.A. Times "The Big Picture" column has launched a blog, joining more than 40 other L.A. Times bloggers.

The Big Picture blog will be in the same style, but, says Goldstein, will had "be broader in scope" - a possibility for a daily blog that has become increasingly difficult in a weekly column. The Big Picture will incorporate new interactive elements, more news and analysis, as well as invite guest bloggers - most recently a 10-year-old girl - to share their views.

Goldstein, in a blog post explaining the launch, said, "...Soon our blogs will be the backbone of the paper...information is everywhere these days. But readers still crave informed analysis and lively writing, which is something we can focus on as newspapers..."

The Daily Mail is planning the launch of a website in India in order to "capitalize on the global potential of the Mail," said Lord Rothermere, chairman of the Daily Mail and General Trust board.

Taking into account Audit Bureau of Circulation figures suggesting that almost 80% of the Mail's unique users are non-U.K. residents, the paper naturally sees a "huge opportunity" in the "global sphere."  

A move into India would build on existing partnerships with The Washington Post and India Today Group, which worked with The Mail to launched the print title Mail Today, reports Journalism.co.uk.

The Daily Mail, which recently debuted a revamped version of its U.K. website, is only the latest in a series of European and American media companies making inroads into the burgeoning media economies in the developing world.

Former editor of Yahoo News Neil Budde has joined DailyMe, a site allowing readers to personalize their daily news flow.

Budde's position as Yahoo editor was preceded by a decade spent building the Wall Street Journal Online.

For the relatively new venture (read the interview with founder Eduardo Hauser at the time of the October launch), bringing an experienced online newsman like Budde into the fold will likely prove an excellent strategic move.

It also points towards the growing importance of news aggregation. Hauser said as much in his blog: "Neil's decision to move across country to Florida and join our team underscores my belief that the news aggregation space is one of the most exciting out there."    

In Budde's own blog post, he says that he viewed his previous jobs as  "understanding the needs and interests of news consumers and translating them into the most useful and engaging news experience possible."

That is the same mentality which he says he will incorporate at DailyMe. Budde writes, "I believe that we are still at the early stages of digital news consumption," which is in large part why he made the jump from a mainstream news organization to a start-up. He sees significantly greater opportunities for experimentation and adaptation with a "lean start-up."

Newspapers have always tended to follow an assembly-line model for news in which information traveled from sources, through more hands, and eventually to the readers. But Washington Post Executive Editor Leonard Downie and Managing Editor Philip Bennett  are implementing changes in their editing model so that it resembles more of a network, "responding to how journalism is actually created, distributed and discovered by audiences in print and online."

On March 14, they sent out a memo outlining innovations in the editing process for the A section, which will eventually spread across the newsroom:

Goals:
- Remove layers of editing by providing more flexibility of when and by whom a story is edited
- Create a truer alignment between print and web articles by recognizing that deadlines for many pieces are defined at the earliest moment they can be edited and published online
- Strengthen collaboration among editors to change how a story, graphic, or photograph goes in the paper

Plan:
- New assistant editors moved from National and Foreign copy desks to take on new roles to begin earlier in the day. They will move early copy to the web and for the next day's paper, provide the first read on some stories and the final edit on others, compose working headlines, collaborate with the News Desk to assign stories to pages earlier than our current practices allow, amd copy edit projects and non-breaking enterprise stories.
 
- A new night desk, comprised of the copy desks of National and Foreign, that will copy edit breaking news, write or refine headlines and captions, and proofing, and edit fewer columns than is currently the case, since more stories will receive final editing during the day.
 
- New copy flows by shifting the editing of feature stories, non-breaking enterprise pieces and projects to daylight hours and having assistant editors and assignment editors work together to ensure that non-breaking enterprise stories are edited by early afternoon. Deadlines for non-breaking foreign stories from bureaus across the world will no longer be 6 p.m. Washington time.

- Earlier decisions to end the practice of assigning and laying out every page on our late night deadlines. The News Desk will assign early pages shortly after noon to accommodate edited pieces. A1 decision-making to be advanced by selecting at least one non-breaking story by 3 p.m, and A1 features and enterprises stories will be planned days in advance,

- Fewer "touches" on some stories. Many stories will be handled under a "two touch" rule; they will have a first editor and a second editor instead of 6 editors. Read more here.

- New tools for assignment editors. By collaborating with assistant editors during the day, assignment editors will have greater flexibility in determining their daily editing schedules, avoiding bottlenecks and late edits on routine stories. In addition to supervising their reporters, assignment editors will advance the editing process by doing more fact-checking, and (along with assistant editors) composing working headlines for pieces. Working headlines will also be welcome from reporters when they file.

The editing changes is slated to coincide with the launch of the redesign of the A section pages, which will coordinate new design elements and templated pages with the copy flow and consultative process the plan introduces for editing.

"In the long run, changing the editing structure of the newsroom means transforming some long-held newsroom practices and parts of our culture," the memo concludes. "Most importantly, it calls on us to communicate even more openly and directly with one another as stories are assigned, reported and written."

Video, video, video. In 2007, the ‘V’ word was the new craze for newspapers internationally. And this is bound to continue in 2008. But just how much video should newspapers seek? Is it an optional plus, should all reporters be assigned to capture video, or should a newsroom even have its in-house studio? In Part 1, we take a look at several examples of how newspapers have included video.

The first free English-language tabloid daily will be launched in Thailand at the beginning of the next year by an already established Thai newspaper, The Nation.

There’s no question that video is one of this year’s biggest priorities for newspapers, whether national or local. In this Q&A, the Editors Weblog interviewed Alexander Houben, editor of volksfreund.tv, an online local TV channel launched by the German local paper Volksfreund. Houben describes video’s costs, its effects on journalists and how the editorial content fits the paper's strategy.

User-generated content websites have flourished and there is no question now that they are here to stay, and that ‘user’ content will increasingly pervade all media – ‘traditional’ media that is. Has the definition of ‘News’ changed, or deteriorated, with the Web 2.0 revolution?  Are UGC sites competitors or facilitators for newspapers transitioning to the online world?
