All ABC-audited UK publishers saw record web traffic in October, due in large part to the coverage of the "build up" to the US presidential election and the economic crisis, which made up for the interstices of regular reporting, according to Guardian.co.uk.

Figures by the Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronic show that Guardian.co.uk recorded more than 25 million unique users in October, marking its fifth month "as the most popular UK newspaper website." 

The Irish Times is one of the latest to launch a free website, after being subscription-only for around five years.

According to PaidContent.co.uk, the site itself will have richer content and will allow readers to interact more successfully with each other and with the newspaper staff.

The Irish Times is currently integrating its newsroom. "In a new world where trust and accuracy are often the casualties of speed," it will also seek to further co-ordinate print and online content.

"The move to a free Irish Times on the web follows in the recent footsteps of many leading newspaper titles in the world today, among them the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times," wrote the Times.

The Corpus Christi (Texas) Caller-Times and The Bakersfield Californian are two daily locals that, largely by supporting user-generated content, buck the trend observed by Amy Gahran, of the Poynter Institute, to move away from local coverage. The papers have developed loyal and growing audiences.

Bakersfield.com began hosting weblogs two years ago and since its launch, has become home to 1,192 individual bloggers, 314 of which are updated within the last three months. Community content now represents 18 percent of Bakerfield.com's traffic. Logan Molen, vice president of the Californian's interactive media said, "It is easily the fastest growing source of traffic for us."

The Caller-Times, in turn, garners around 560 comments a day - a number enviable by many larger papers - and especially impressive for a paper with a 54,000 daily circulation.
 
"One day earlier this month a Corpus businessman was shot while cycling before work. A check of the digital back fence showed 56 people had commented on the paper's coverage by noon. Acts of troubling random violence aside, a story on summer jobs had drawn 33 comments, and the newspaper's columnists each seemed to draw a healthy handful. In fact, of all the local stories on the website that day, more had comments than didn't," notes the Readership Institute.

Caller-Times Editor Libby Averyt addresses readers regularly in a column, and listens to their feedback. Wheen readers mourned the dropping of a popular comic strip, the paper reversed the decision and when the paper stopped printing the TV book, the paper smoothed over complaints with a compromise of a stand-alone section of trimmed-down listings.

Local-focus, with locally generated content has led the Caller-Times to be able to cite year over year increases in paid print circulation (up 0.25 percent daily, 0.18 Sunday, according to FAS-FACS).

Hearst magazines have already adopted Yahoo's newly launched user-driven news aggregator, Yahoo Buzz.

Hearst has already signed on 10 of its titles, including Esquire, Cosmopolitan and Redbook.

When a reader click through the Yahoo homepage to a Hearst article, the publication's website offers promotions for other Hearts offerings, as well as cross-promotion with the print titles.

A Yahoo "Buzz up" button is featured next to articles on the publisher's site, for users to vote on an article.

"Buzz is different from other social sites because it brings the power and scale of Yahoo," said Chris Johnson, VP, content and business development, for Hearst Magazines Digital.

"It's a chance to get our great content in front of Yahoo users who have already demonstrated interest."

Apparently, two Esquire.com articles have already enjoyed traffic increases thanks to Yahoo Buzz, receiving 1.3 million click-throughs after being featured on the Yahoo homepage.

Newspapers that have signed up for Yahoo Buzz include USA Today, the Wall Street Journal and Entertainment Weekly.

The Chicago Tribune is wondering whether it should bring back the evening newspaper – or the evening download – to suit news consumers’ evolving habits. Gone are the days of the sole morning paper, in are those of continuous, multi-platform and digital news.

Since USAToday.com relaunched with a community “network journalism” focus in March, traffic has increased 21% according to Nielsen/NetRatings, and the total number of registered users has tripled.

How can a multimedia and online-focused publication be so successful in South Africa, a market in which Internet and broadband access are still relatively limited and telecommunications’ costs are excruciating? Matthew Buckland, publisher of Mail & Guardian (M&G) Online, explains how his newspaper used these obstacles to its own advantage.

One of this year’s major trends in newsrooms was the generalized evolution of the newsroom itself, into what was dubbed ‘integrated newsrooms’. Gannett came up with its own innovative version though, the Local Information Center (IC). The Editors Weblog interviewed one of the main engines of this venture, Jennifer Carroll, Vice President of New Media Content at Gannett Corporation.

At the Kelsey Local Interactive Media Conference in Philadelphia, local newspapers and online groups discussed the future of local news websites. Executives at the conference decided that local sites have the ability to better work with their market in comparison to current portals and advertising networks.

Television network CBS has seen increases in two of its late night shows, which they attribute to clips uploaded to YouTube. The late night talk shows have seen a 5% and 7% increase of viewers since CBS began posting clips on YouTube.

The widespread availability of broadband internet has upped the ante adding much variety to what internet users can view, hear, in short consume, online. In such a climate, video is set to become one of the key new requirements for newspaper websites.

UK regional daily The Hull Daily Mail began offering video news reports on its website in November after six of its journalists completed a diploma in videojournalism, comprised of three weeks of intensive practical training, organised by The Press Association and taught by David Dunkley Gyimah, senior lecturer in Digital Journalism at The University of Westminster.

The Editors Weblog interviewed David Dunkley Gyimah and Paul Hartley, assistant editor at the Hull Daily Mail, asking them about the diploma in videojournalism and the implications of online video for newspaper websites. Both agree that online video will soon be found on most newspaper websites.

Although it is well documented that newspaper circulations have been declining for years, a slide that does not seem will reverse itself soon, it has been shown that newspaper website usage has been rising rapidly. But does their digital readership make up for the loss in print? Will sustainable online financial models emerge? Will the Internet change newspaper journalism?
