MSNBC.com pulled away from the competition in August, achieving 77% growth and 52 million unique users (37.5 million unique users in July). Yahoo! News was its closest rival hitting 41 million unique users. The New York Times was the top newspaper in the poll of top 30 news sites in August from Nielson Online, achieving 20 million unique users.

News sites benefited from a spike in readership due to the Olympic Games and the political conventions.

Four out of the five online news sources that experienced the largest increase in unique users since July 2007 year-on-year were newspaper Web sites, according to a Nielsen Online study which tracked 30 current and global news outlets.

New York Daily News was the biggest increase in unique users, growing by 66% to 4.3 million, despite ranking No.29 on the list. Cox Newspapers' unique users rose by 57% to 5.8 million. Advance's papers grew by 42% to 8 million unique users whereas New York Times rose by 38% to 19.5 million.

MSNBC had the highest number of uniques, having increades by 44% to 37.5 million.

Gannett papers had a 4% decline to 13.2 million uniques. USA Today fell by 2% to 10.4 million and The Washington Post decreased by 2% to 8.9 million.

CBS News and The Washington Post have partnered to share news for their online editions only during the 2008 US presidential campaign.

The Huffington Post has struck a deal with Yahoo and Slate (owned by the WaPo), to host two online debates between candidates along the way to the presidential election. US voters will submit questions to the candidates, and the footage will be streamed on all three websites.

The American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE) convention in Washington DC, held from Tuesday to today, brought together editors of new and old media to discuss the hybrid future of newspapers.

The speculative sale of American newspaper giant Knight Ridder, or break up thereof, does not only reflect years of newspaper circulation slides and huge profit margin demands by shareholders. More relevantly in today's new media world, it demonstrates the original carelessness of the newspaper industry in underestimating the effects the Internet would have as well as the difficulties newspapers currently face in racing to catch up.

The USC Annenberg Online Journalism Review reports of a new trend concerning several online news sites such as Slate, MarketWatch, and DoubleClick. Possible buyers for CBS MarketWatch, a financial news site with newsletter service, are Dow Jones, New York Times Co., Viacom and Yahoo. Toleman Geffs, CEO of Internet Broadcasting Systems, evalutes the situation as follows: MarketWatchis "looking forward and seeing a situation where competition is going to get tougher and growth is going to get harder -- and that's a good time to sell." Slate, on the other hand, the culture and politics site operated by MSN, is on the market since MSN no longer sees it as part of their long-term strategy. MSN's future strategy for the blogger's market, as general manager Scott Moore explains, is based on redistribution of blogs' contents in their user-generated sites and advertisements on the blogs' sites.

Interesting debate between Jack Schafer, Slate and David S. Broder, The Washington Post about journalism standards: for the first one, journalism is more ethical than it used to be in the 70s, and for the WaPo veteran journalist, the latest scandals are a shame for the whole profession.
