Newspapers have been recently emerging as strong contenders for TV awards, formerly dominated by traditional broadcast news organizations, even though most newspapers have only been using video on their Web sites for a few years.

The Detroit Free Press won the News and Documentary Emmy this year for a video news feature, "40 Years of 'Respect'", which looks at the history of Aretha Franklin's famous song and its significance for the people of Detroit.

Nancy Andrews, managing editor for digital media at the Free Press, commented on their success: "We start with the premise that we're storytellers, with strong visuals and a compelling story to begin with."

Unlike those he decries as "misguided cynics," global media mogul Rupert Murdoch believes that newspapers will reach "new heights" in the 21st century.

Although the print newspaper is going to face changes, "it will always be around," Murdoch said, in one version or another.

As we reported yesterday, FT.com has launched the Long Room page on the Alphaville blog. In an interview today, Managing Editor Robert Grimshaw reported that the website will not be participating in monthly traffic measures by the UK's Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronic (ABCes), because its focus is on "quality not quantity."

On October 27, the Financial Times launched a new discussion area for its blog-site, Alphaville.  The new area is entitled The Long Room after a famous pub in London.

The chat room will emulate the pub by creating virtual discussion tables that registered users can sit at and join the discussion.  Users can also start their own discussion tables.  Users will be able to contribute text comments along with documents and multimedia contributions.

On Tuesday, October 21 Tribune COO, Randy Michaels sent a memo discussing the reinvention of the Tribune's newspapers for readers and advertisers to employees as a means to provide some positive reinforcement.

Michaels talked about recent changes to the Tribune's eight papers.  In the last six months, all of them have been redesigned and operations in the news room have been restructured.

He also discussed new print partnerships: the Tribune's Florida's Sun Sentinel will begin printing, packaging and transporting the Palm Beach Post; The Baltimore Sun is printing and distributing the Washington Times in areas around Baltimore; and the Chicago Tribune is distributing the Chicago Sun-Times.

According to Chicago Business, the Obama campaign has announced plans to charge for coverage on election night, November 4 at Grant Park in Chicago.

CB reports that prices start at $715 and run up to $1,815.  CB also reports that for $935 a reporter can have a spot in the heated file tent, access to power, cable TV, Internet and food.

CBS Interactive will be launching an online service nicknamed the "social viewing room" that will let multiple users to watch and interact with streaming TV content, reports the European Journalism Centre. The feature will be a mixture of a chat room, video conferences and live streaming.

Citizen journalism may receive a boost as prominent interactive video streaming website Stickam.com reports the launch of Stickam Mobile. The service will allow users to upload live video to Stickam players though mobile devices, to see the number of live viewers at a given moment as well as get a glimpse of chat room content on their mobile phone screens.

Rupert Murdoch was recently declared one of Esquire's 75 most influential people of the 21st Century, in an issue of the monthly magazine that included a special e-Ink cover.

In an interview with Esquire, Murdoch discussed his personal history, the effects of growing up in a journalistic family, and his first foray into the US market with the purchase of the tabloid daily, The Star.  He also talked about the challenges faced by newspapers, competition between the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, and the age of the Internet and social networking.

The Future of Newspapers

Murdoch admitted that he "did not know the future" but that he was sure that knowledge is going to become increasingly more valuable.  He went on to discuss the changing business models of old newspapers and even admitted that "if you look at the readership of newspapers...its worrying."  But went on to talk about the future of the Internet and its "tremendous" use.
