Politico announced plans to expand and increase print production.  Politico was launched in 2007 and is now one of the most popular online sources for political news in the United States.  The print version is distributed free to offices on Capitol Hill with a circulation of 26,000 on Tuesday through Thursday when Congress is in Session.

The news comes as somewhat of a surprise considering that after the elections popular interest in politics is bound to drop.  Politico plans to increase to four print editions per week.  The new launch will coincide with a website redesign.  Plans to hire additional staff members, including reporters, editors, and Web engineers are also in the works

Politico's plans to increasing print production has sparked interest because of daily announcements by other news organizations of their plans to reduce print in an effort to cut costs. 

The newspaper accounts for most of Politico's revenue, however, according to The New York Times, the web site is closing in.  Politico's site draws over three million unique visitors a month.

The latest Nielsen Online data shows that newspaper sites experienced a year-on-year growth in unique users in August.

Politico.com surged by 156%, reaching 3.6 million uniques, and moved up from being No. 17 to No. 10 last month. The Washington Post's unique audience increased by 25% to 11.2 million, giving the site the No. 2 position.

Four news outlets experienced a decline in unique: Newsday (decreased by 2%), Atlanta Journal-Constitution (down by 29%), AZCentral.com (decreased by 28%), and Village Voice Media (declined by 27%).

Since 2004, the number of new, "citizen-generated" media and reporters at the US political conventions has significantly increased. It has become more difficult to differentiate between independent bloggers and traditional ones as traditional media is adopting a "multi-platform" method, according to Media Shift's Mark Glaser.

The average time spent per person on nearly half of top 30 US newspaper websites in July 2008 has decreased year-on-year, according to Nielsen Online data.

The figure for the Houston Chronicle increased from 14 minutes to 25 minutes and from 12 minutes to 16 minutes for the San Francisco Chronicle/SFGate.com. Growth was also seen at NYTimes.com, USAToday.com and the Wall Street Journal website.

The average time spent per person at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution site dropped from 23 minutes to 10 minutes and from 18 minutes to 9 minutes at Boston.com.

More than 80% of top US newspaper sites experienced increased unique visitors since year-on-year since June 2007. Nielsen published a report on the average times that users spend on newspaper sites.

Time that users spent online grew for sites like the New York Times, USA Today, Newsday and Ottoway Newspapers. Time spent online nearly doubled for the Houston Chronicle,  the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

However, a decrease was seen on the Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times. Furthemore, nearly half of the top 30 sites reported a decline in time spent on their sites.

Nielsen Online has reported that more than 80% of online newspapers in the top 30 recorded increases in the number of unique visitors for the month of June, compared to the same month a year ago.

There were some exceptions, including the Houston Chronicle -- which fell 44% in June -- and Ottaway Newspapers, falling 30%, however,  the majority enjoyed significant increases. New York's Daily News Online jumped 109% year-over-year in June to 3.8 million uniques. Newsday increased uniques by 73% to 3.0 million visitors, and monthly uniques at Village Voice Media was up 70% to 2.2 million.

This week's cover of the New Yorker, called "The Politics of Fear", may have caused some turmoil, but the message may have been misinterpreted.

"The cover takes a lot of distortions, lies, and misconceptions about the Obamas and puts a mirror up to them to show them for what they are," said the New Yorker's editor, David Remnick.

Bill Burton, an Obama spokesperson said that even though the cover was a satire, readers might see it as "tasteless" and "offensive". Meanwhile, Senator John McCain thought it was "inappropriate", reported AFP.

"These inflammatory images and spurious associations will only serve to reinforce the racism and anti-Muslim stereotypes that the magazine says it is out to challenge," said The Council on American Islamic Relations.

However, Bill Maher, host of a political HBO show, asked, "If you can't do irony on the cover of The New Yorker, where can you do it?"

Chicago Tribune's Clarence Page defended the cover, saying that it's "within the normal realms of journalism" and that "it's just lampooning all the crazy ignorance out there", according to CBS News.

The magazine issue, which goes on sale on July 21, features a lengthy article focusing on Obama's history in Chicago politics.

Barry Blitt, the cartoon's artist, intended to come up with something that would caricature the way that misinformation floats around the political sphere and the way that terror is used as a political tool, according to Newsday.

With new ledes like, "John McCain calls himself an underdog. That may be an understatement," and "I miss Hillary," the Associated Press style is experiencing unprecedented change.

Washington bureau chief, Ron Fournier, is encouraging news pieces to incorporate first-person writing and use emotive language; Fournier defends the changes as "accountability journalism."

Accountability journalism is "provocative without being partisan," said Fournier. "Truth-tellers without being editorial writers." The bureau chief claims this form of journalism liberates both journalists and the truth.

Not all agree. "The problem," says James Taranto, the Wall Street Journal's Best of the Web columnist, "is that while you can do opinion journalism and incorporate reporting into it, you can't say you're doing straight reporting, and then add opinion to that."

Fournier is receiving some pushback not only outside the organization, but also from his own staff; some feel the changes stray from the AP's mission of "delivering fast, unbiased news."

According to Politco, "At times, Fournier has pulled back. He wanted to open a news analysis...in May with, 'The Democratic presidential race is over' ... After some back and forth, the reporters won out with 'The Democratic presidential race is all but over.'"

"The AP has always been a just-the-facts type of organization," an AP staffer explained. "I think there's mixed feelings -- there's reluctance."

The Washington Post is exploring the possibility of creating a parallel, semi-autonomous political site that would feature politics articles and multimedia, the Washington City Paper (WCP) reported.

The Post is seeking to make an innovative site that is different from the current one, according to a memo from the Post's Bill Hamilton and Rajiv Chandrasekaran, WCP reported.

According to Hamilton and Chandrasekaran, the outline of the new site includes news and analysis, more photography, exclusive and higher-quality videos, focus on good political enterprise stories interactive features.

According to the WCP, the idea is similar to that proposed two years ago by the Post's former political writers John Harris and Jim VandeHei, who left to start the Politico.

When the Politico site was being launched, Albritton Communication purchased URLs related to the Politico, including Postpolics.com.

Months later, the Post Co. found that out and after claims of identity theft and some negotiation, it paid about $20,000 to secure the domain name.

According to Editor & Publisher's Jennifer Saba, newspaper Web site traffic increased the amount of unique users, year-over-year, a Nielsen study reported.

Dallas Morning News traffic grew by 156 % to 3.2 million unique users since May 2007, which Saba says is thanks to "search-engine optimization and the Yahoo alliance."

The Politico's traffic increased by a whopping 262 % to 3.5 million since May 2007, most likely due to interest in the current presidential campaigns.

Similarly, newspaper sites like those for Minneapolis's Star Tribune, the New York DailyNews and Atlanta's Journal-Constitution all experienced an increase in unique users.

A number of sites such as those for the San Francisco Chronicle and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer have decreased unique users, by 10% and by 12% respectively.

Who's a reporter today? As our definition of 'journalist' evolves, do our expectations and standards evolve as well? The blogospheric fallout seems to just be gaining momentum in the debate over identity, integrity, and professionalism.

Mayhill Fowler, the Off the Bus citizen journalist who first reported Obama's 'bitter' comments - which were made at an event closed to "the press" - is now the source of another off the cuff (and likely presumed to be off the record) comment.

Fowler worked her way to the front of the crowd at a campaign event in South Dakota, and as Bill Clinton took her hand, she asked him to respond to a recent unflattering article on the Vanity Fair website. The former US President spouts on the "sleazy" and "slimy" article, even calling Todd Purdum, the author and former New York Times reporter "dishonest."

Within hours, Fowler had posted about the exchange, along with her audio recording of the three-minute conversation on Off the Bus.

In her post, Fowler refers to herself as "this reporter," yet at no time did she identify herself to Clinton as a journalist.

The New York Times 'Week in Review' picked up the issue, asking, "In an era when anyone with a cellphone and wi-fi connection can make like Tom Brokaw, do the long-accepted conventions of engagement (like a reporter's volunteering who she is without being asked) still apply?"

The blogs have digressed into an interesting parallel as they debate the Fowler incident:

Politico blogger, Michael Calderone, called Fowler "disingenuous" and criticized her practices. In turn, Jeff Jarvis critiqued Calderone's post, which he viewed as playing into the "clubbiness of the press."

Then it gets interesting - Calderone both emailed and called Jarvis to complain about the post. "I arrived home and found a comment on my post that echoed his opinions closely under the name Mary," explains Jarvis on his blog.

"Mary" defends Politico (and calls Jarvis' post "disgraceful" and "totally off-the-mark"), but does not claim any Politco affiliation. Yet Jarvis reports that the comment is in fact posted from the Politico IP address - "the irony."

And so the debate continues, on the level of anonymity acceptable on comment boards and over the role and standards acceptable for citizen journalism.

In his next post, Jarvis comments on the "ethic of identity," and argues for full disclosure, online or off.

A recent study by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants finds cause for optimism for the print newspaper industry. The study foresees the future growth of print media, but urges imminent action in order to ensure its survival.

According to Alexander Mogg, a partner in Roland Berger's InfoCom Competence Center, the time for action is now.

"With so many operational optimizations already successfully implemented, what needs to be done now is to set the strategic course for the next five to ten years," Mogg says.

For him, the future for newspapers is by becoming increasingly targeted and focusing on areas of strength (see a similar argument by Jim VandeHei and the Politico).

"Magazines and newspapers will only be able to achieve lasting success in multimedia competition if they really know their target groups and focus on the inherent strengths of print publications. We see growth potential in the premium reader segment and in other niches."

The study presents nine scenarios for the future of the newspaper and includes some strategies for success. Among the strategies:

    -- Frequent, thorough market research, in order to identify trends within readerships: "Print        media can only successfully compete with other media if they are clearly positioned,"            according to Roland Berger's website.

    --"In multimedia competition, print media will have to focus on their inherent strengths -            beyond quality, these include providing readers with an individual experience and the            deliberate choice to set aside quality time in their busy schedules."

    --Filling niche markets: "The mass market has been fully distributed, but niches still hold           growth potential."

    --Brand investments (this also includes "training" younger generations to adjust to print           media.): "Brand investments are generally worthwhile, because a strong brand is                   becoming more and more important in an increasingly fragmented media landscape."

Political newspaper and news site Politico has partnered Yahoo and will carry today the first-ever video interview of George W.Bush exclusively for an online audience.

Start political reporter Mike Allen, now at the Politico, will conduct the interview.

"It's the first time he (Bush) has granted an interview exclusively for an online audience," said Tony Fratto, deputy assistant to United States President George W. Bush and deputy press secretary.

"This interview is a natural progression in political news coverage, mirroring the change in the habits of Americans, who are increasingly turning online for their news," said Alan Warms, vice president and general manager, Yahoo! News.

Without a doubt, this interview is representative of a major shift in the habits of the audience and the credibility that is given to the Internet as a platform of distribution.

Last September, Yahoo! News had teamed with the Huffington Post to host the first-ever online presidential debate. In February, Yahoo and Politico had already partnered to conduct video interview with GOP candidates before Super Tuesday.

It seems both parties have benefited from this agreement: Yahoo! News is the most-visited overall online website, Politico can offer very in-depth and reactive political coverage.
