Copyright owners await YouTube final sale to sue

Google Inc.`s current online video service, Google Video, has been sued for copyright infringement. This could be a foretaste of the legal debacles Google will encounter once it finalizes its purchase of YouTube Inc.
Analysts suspect that copyright owners are waiting for the sale to be completed before launching their legal attacks on YouTube’s future owner, Google.
Google is used to copyright infringement suits – recently in France, Belgium and Australia – and will certainly stand well-armed. YouTube recently reached licensing agreements with Vivendi’s Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group.
Rumors that the company set aside $500 million for copyright legal settlements were denied by Google Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt.
As was Napster Inc.’s downfall, the outcome of these lawsuits could be a milestone for the future of online copyrighted file distribution.
