That the world of traditional media is in crisis, nobody doubts. However the question raised by Michael Hirschorn of the Atlantic, is just how long the industry can continue in its current situation.  He takes the example of the struggling New York Times and hypothesizes about the end coming sooner than anyone expects - May in fact.  Whilst the NYT going out of business within months looks highly unlikely, its current financial status leaves this seemingly far-fetched theory every so slightly more plausible. 

Canadian web marketing agency Dialect has created a website billed as 'an online memorial to the traditional media industry.'  Traditional Publishing, RIP aggregates headlines which document "the sad decline of traditional publishing."

According to Press Gazette, one of the site's creators, Nik Szymanis, commented that "the headlines are presented starkly and without comment, giving a sobering view of the current state of media."

Bolloré Group has launched the third edition of free daily Direct in Nice according to Newspaper Innovation.  The paper's initial circulation will be 35,000.

  In addition, the Paris edition, Direct Matin, will increase in circulation by 50,000 copies to 500,000.  New editions of the freesheet are also planned for the cities of Toulouse and Strasbourg.

According to a report published by the Pew Research Center, the Internet overtook print newspapers as a news source this year in the United States.

The report found that Internet usage surged from 24% to 40% in a year, overtaking the 35% who rely on newspapers, the Guardian reports.

The New York Times reports that the change "does not represent a decline in the popularity of newspapers," but rather a "near-doubling" of the number of people that name the Internet as their primary news source.  Newspapers actually gained a percentage point in popularity over the last year.

A report entitled "Size Doesn't Matter" concludes that news sites on the Internet can be profitable, if they reach a certain amount of readers, according to Advertising Age.

Online media-research company ContentNext looked at independently run, low budget sites like Drudge Report to media giants Google News.  

Cost-intensive operations by major publications such as the New York Times, AdAge reports, as well as small website operations, can be self-sustaining, according to the report's author Lauren Rich Fine.  

The challenge is getting enough readers to create "a discernable enough brand to make advertisers seek them out."

Brian Till, one of the US's youngest syndicated columnists, had an epiphany during his discussions about the decline in American journalism.  

Although he spends "hours a day reading news," and has countless resources at his disposal, he has only purchased "bout a dozen American papers in the last year." Till finds that, ipso facto, his actions have helped diminish the newspaper industry.  

"I am the murderer of news," he writes, along with his generation, who has failed to recognize the role they've played. Growing up with free news, Till writes, has left his generation clueless to the fact that they were the "free riders killing the industry."

Ten weekly titles and one monthly community newspaper are facing closure threats from Newsquest, according to Hold the Front Page.

The company is also proposing a series of changes, including creating three regional production hubs, which will be responsible for all sub-editing work.

Newspaper planning, according to a memo by regional managing director Chris Hughes, will be centralized for all of the North West titles, but the news gathering operation will not be affected "in most cases."

The titles in the North West division are undergoing a period of "consultation with affected staff," according to Hughes, but it is not known how many will be made redundant.

The moves are being considered with the objective of "realigning the company's cost base, with the expectation that revenues will continue to decline in 2009," the memo states.

The restructuring is a matter of efficiency, according to the memo, and is expected that the company will "continue to produce first class newspapers, both in print and online."

Eurostat - the statistics wing of the European Commission - published results this week on internet access across the European Union. For the first time, a European country has seen a decline in internet access per household. The percentage of Italian households with Internet access fell from 43 percent, in 2007, to 42 percent in 2008.

In an attempt to draw young readers to its website, the Register-Mail has created a page on social networking site Facebook, according to editor Tom Martin.

The page is aimed at some of the audience who do not check the paper's website every day, but may check Facebook multiple times per day. 

One month after its initial trial period, a meeting of about 30 editors will be held in Atlanta to hear about CNN's wire service.

CNN has made plans to broaden its service to provide coverage of national, international and possibly local events "on a smaller scale and at a lower cost" than the Associated Press, according to Editor and Publisher.

With an impending closure of two local newspapers, seven state legislators have written to state Economic Development Commissioner Joan McDonald for a meeting to determine how to save them, The Hartford Courant reports.

The all-Democratic delegations from Bristol and New Britain are trying to save the New Britain Herald and the Bristol Press, who will be shut down soon after Christmas if a buyer is not found.

The Journal Register Co. is faced with a "huge advertising decline at papers nationwide" and "slumping" state and national economics, and is seeking new ownership of the titles.

A letter from the legislators said that neither community could "afford the loss of jobs that these closures would mean."

Roger Alton, editor of UK daily newspaper The Independent, said in an interview on Sky News Online that he takes responsibilty for the publication's declining economic situation. Alton also sttates that there are no plans to sell the newspaper in the future.

Alton goes on to say that the price increase startegy (from 80p to £1 in September) failed and pushed sales down further. The price rise made The Independent more expensive than other papers in the UK market, such as The Telegraph, The Guardian and The Times.

The Guardian's Peter Wilby asks the question:  just how many journalists do you need to publish a newspaper?  In today's failing economy, circulation declines, dried up advertising revenue and the transition to new media, can a newspaper staff maintain its numbers?  Is "small," he asks, inevitable?

There was a decline in the average time spent per person on newspaper websites in October compared to last year, according to a Nielson Online report.

While monthly uniques increased, the data followed a similar September trend of a decrease in time spent on some sites.

The New York Times, the leader in time spent on newspaper's websites, saw an increase from 35 minutes in October 2007 to 40 minutes this year, the report says.  Politico increased its time spent from 9 minutes to 19, while its monthly uniques increased 178%.

Unlike those he decries as "misguided cynics," global media mogul Rupert Murdoch believes that newspapers will reach "new heights" in the 21st century.

Although the print newspaper is going to face changes, "it will always be around," Murdoch said, in one version or another.

After a series of "rapid launches of free dailies between August and October 2006," two more of Denmark's editions of 24timer have closed, according to MediaWatch.

The latest closures in Odense and Aalberg on Friday mark a trend in the Danish newspaper market, which has been in a circulation decline since 1997.

In 2006, Denmark had 10 different free dailies with "20 editions and a total circulation of more than two million."  After a series of shutdowns, 24timer, Metro and Urban are the three that remain, each with only 3 editions and a circulation of less than 600,000.  Odense and Aalberg each had a circulation of 20,000.

Paid circulation in Denmark "dropped almost 25% in the last ten years," and free circulation is going down "even faster."
