Six countries, six leading newspapers, a huge audience and one common theme: Europe, how to explain it better, how to understand it better, how to build it better. This is the aim of an editorial project which saw six papers joining forces to produce a joint special edition on the situation of the European Union.

"The state of the Union", echoing the State of the union speech US President Obama gave on 24 January, is the angle of the first issue of Europa (more will be expected in future) produced by El Pais, the Guardian, Le Monde, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Gazeta Wyborcza and La Stampa.

This joint special editorial supplement aims to give a "more nuanced picture of the EU and explore what Europe does well and what not so well", as the Guardian explained.

In February 2010, along with the UK newspaper the Guardian and The New York Times (USA), German weekly newspaper Der Spiegel chose to publish diplomatic cables from the U.S. State Department that had been provided to them by controversial whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks.

Speaking during the first session of the 18th World Editors Forum, "After WikiLeaks: The next step for newspapers," Der Spiegel Editor-in-Chief Mathias Müller von Blumencron said he chose to publish the material because he believed it was worthy of publishing, and treated WikiLeaks as he would have any source, albeit one with a vast amount of information, far more than the magazine was immediately able to deal with.

To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction - it seems that Newton's third law is as easily applicable to the media as it is to elementary physics. It is natural that in the aftermath of the News Corp. phone hacking scandal should prompt significant questions about press regulation across the globe. So, the industry is now lying in wait to see exactly what shape these reforms will take.

Even in Australia, Murdoch's birth place, questions have been prompted about the potential for a media review, as Prime Minister Julia Gillard admitted in a speech that recent revelations in Britain have prompted "considerations about the role of the media in our democracy".  There have also been calls for reviews of media legislation from the leader of the Australian Greens Party, Bob Brown. 

News Ltd., the Australian subsidiary of News Corp., has pre-empted any parliamentary inquiry by announcing an internal investigation into the possibility of similar malpractice. When questioned in an interview with Reuters , CEO and Chairman of News Ltd. John Hartigan claimed to be "Hugely confident that there is no improper or unethical behaviour in our newsrooms."

Twitter is the world news wire of the twenty-first century; immediate, instantaneous information from across the globe, at your finger tips at any time. Everyone knows exactly how useful microblogging can be when reporting on everything from major world events, such as natural disasters and social upheaval, to local happenings - but the challenge of real-time reporting is not gaining access to information, but rather verifying it.

This prompts the question: how best to verify news gathered from social media, particularly if official sources contradict what the twittersphere portrays as truth? As Daniel Victor reports, this was the challenge faced by reporters from the Philadelphia Daily News, when on July 4th Twitter presented journalists with news about a shooting in the city, a shooting of which the police had no knowledge.

So, how do large new organisations go about tackling situations like this and what is the best model to imitate? In his Reuters' Institute, University of Oxford, Fellowship Paper, entitled 'Tweet First, Verify Later?' , Nicola Bruno examines the strategies used by the BBC, The Guardian and CNN to establish the credibility of online sources and information. Bruno draws comparisons between the centralised 'hub' for social media and online reports used by the BBC, the "community-centred" approach adopted by CNN and the embedded "community coordinators" at The Guardian.

In the wake of the 9.0 earthquake that hit Japan on March 11 of this year, the Japanese news industry showed resilience and dedication to keeping their readership informed. 

Initially, newspapers in northeastern Japan had difficulties publishing, but thanks to mutual anti-disaster agreements with newspapers in neighboring prefectures, newspapers in the heavily affected Tohoku region were able to continue publishing.

Privacy injunctions and super injunctions have made the front-pages of UK newspapers in the last few days.

Through a privacy injunction, a court prevents the news media from reporting on some information or details of a story. As the BBC explained, a super-injunction stops anyone publishing information about the applicant, which is said to be confidential or private - but also prevents anyone from reporting that the injunction itself even exists.

As a Media Laws' article explained, the "super-injunction" has been widely discussed in the UK since late 2009 when the oil-trading firm Trafigura wanted to restrict the Guardian from publishing a report relating to the waste dumping scandal in Cote d'Ivoire. 

Al Jazeera announced the release of its journalist, Dorothy Parvaz, who was detained in Syria upon her arrival in Damascus nineteen days ago, while on assignment.

Facebook has been caught secretly paying a top public relations firm to plant negative stories about Google in the US media, the Guardian reported.

It first appeared that someone hired Burson-Marsteller, a PR firm, to get some US news outlets to publish anti-Google stories to highlight its privacy flaws, specifically regarding one of its tools, Social Circle.

As The Daily Beast reported, Burson even asked Chris Soghoian, an influential blogger, to help write a Google-bashing op-ed, which it promised it could place in outlets like the Washington Post, Politico or the Huffington Post.

Daily Telegraph's reporters were wrong to use subterfuge to secretly record conversations with Liberal Democrats MPs during constituency surgeries last December, the UK Press Complaints Commission has ruled. The PCC is upholding the complaint against the paper raised by Liberal Democrat president Tim Farron, Journalism.co.uk reported.

Last December two undercover reporters secretly recorded MPs including business secretary Vince Cable, who at that time was charged with taking the final decision on News Corp's bid to take full control over BskyB. Cable was recorded saying that he had "declared war on Mr Murdoch".

The scoop however was published not by the Telegraph, but by the BBC. A whistleblower at the Telegraph told Robert Peston, business editor for BBC News, that the Telegraph "had made a commercial decision not to publish those remarks".  

The UK Press Complaints Commission is seeking to bring journalistic Twitter feeds under its regulation, the Guardian reported

The article noted that while the PCC is currently unable to rule on complaints about newspapers' tweets, it is trying to consolidate social media messages under its remit and has started consultation with the newspapers industry to this end.

Some postings on Twitter should be considered - in PCC's opinion- as part of a "newspaper's editorial product" and should go under the regulation of the code of practice.

The plan, however, the Guardian said, is to distinguish between newspapers' accounts, professional journalistic accounts and private tweets. "Some journalists - such as the BBC's Rory Cellan-Jones - already maintain multiple accounts in an effort to preserve professional and personal distinctions", the article noted.

ABC figures - reported by Journalism.co.uk - show a general increase in traffic for the month of March.

The Mail Online leads this positive trend, with a 29.59% increase of monthly unique browsers compared to February's results.

The Guardian.co.uk and the Telegraph.co.uk follow with, respectively, an increase of 24.54% and 22.21%. Good results come also from the Independent.co.uk (+7.10%) and from the Mirror Group (+4.75%).

Results for the Times and the Sun, the article highlighted, remain unreported, as requested by News International following the introduction of a paywall for the Times and Sunday Times last year and following ABC's announcement of changes in its policy that allow members not to publish online traffic figures.

The wedding fever is spreading, as well as scepticism about the prominence the event is obtaining.

Media around the world have directed the spotlight on the event and madness seems to be spreading among fans. Some items of memorabilia lie somewhere between amazing and insane.

The BBC will provide streamed footage and a live stream of the ceremony will be featured also by the official YouTube channel of the British Monarchy. As previously reported, the BBC was said to be devoting an enormous 850 staff to cover the event while Sky and ITV have 460 people there. An estimate said 8,000 reporters would be in London to cover the wedding.

Is this all a bit too much? It's not just tabloids who are devoting a lot of attention to the event - even the most authoritative media outlets are doing the same. 

People who think to have been publicly misrepresented or wrongly and inaccurately represented have the right to ask for a correction and to re-establish the truth about them. There is no doubt about it.

Accuracy and fair reporting are the fundamental pillars of journalism. It's the basis of professional ethics.

The need to maintain true accountability demands that the press publishes a correction whenever it is found to be necessary.

That's why many news media not only have correction pages but have also established internal watchdog system such as an ombudsman or have subscribed to self-regulation bodies as news (or press) councils. 

The Guardian reported that to promote the physical release of their eighth album, The King of Limbs, Radiohead are to distribute a free newspaper at 61 locations worldwide. It will be a "wholly undigital ink-and-paper handout" called the Universal Sigh.

Ibrahim Eissa, an independent editor who faced prosecution in Egypt while pushing for media freedom has received the Guardian Journalism Award at the Index on Censorship Freedom of Expression awards, journalism.co.uk reported. Sorry, Kate Hudson, the days of suing the press for publicizing your alleged eating disorder may be over.  

Yesterday, the British government unveiled a Defamation Bill targeted at amending libel laws that are often used for "libel tourism," a tactic where plaintiffs file a libel suit in a foreign jurisdiction (usually the U.K., where there is often little to no jurisdictional link) to take advantage of a media law regime that favors plaintiffs, according to the Media Law Resource Center.

The Defamation Bill also puts an end to the use of juries in libel trials except when absolutely necessary, in an effort to cut costs and speed up the court process.

The main purpose of the bill is the reassertion of the importance of public interest and principle of defending the truth--both elements of a viable democracy--instead of having traditional libel laws co-opted by corporations and rich business people, interest groups, and celebrities with deep pockets, who sue with seemingly the intention of bankrupting media outlets and individual journalists that publish critique and dissenting opinion.
