US: Pulitzer prize winners include online journalism

Posted by John Burke on April 19, 2006 at 11:01 AM
Making good on its word, the Pulitzer Prize committee included online journalism in several categories in its recent selection of the year's best American journalism. About 10% of entries had an "online component" and Editor and Publisher counted at least one that used blog journalism.

The most significant online journalism came from New Orleans' Times-Picayune for its Katrina coverage. For a few days after the storm hit, the paper didn't print an online edition and had to rely on the Web to educate its community and the world of the misfortune its city faced.

The Pulitzer's administrator, Sig Gissler, commented that online certainly helped the Times-Picayune, especially because there is no space restriction in printing photos such as there is in print.
