After the Hartford Courant redesigned its format last September, the response to the front page's new look was extremely negative. The paper's decision to move the nameplate from a traditional, horizontal position to a vertical orientation displeased enough readers that management decided to do something about it.

An informal online poll asked readers to choose their preferred look for the Courant from among three options. The results overwhelmingly favored a horizontal nameplate, and the paper has since reverted to the more traditional format.

Hearst magazines have already adopted Yahoo's newly launched user-driven news aggregator, Yahoo Buzz.

Hearst has already signed on 10 of its titles, including Esquire, Cosmopolitan and Redbook.

When a reader click through the Yahoo homepage to a Hearst article, the publication's website offers promotions for other Hearts offerings, as well as cross-promotion with the print titles.

A Yahoo "Buzz up" button is featured next to articles on the publisher's site, for users to vote on an article.

"Buzz is different from other social sites because it brings the power and scale of Yahoo," said Chris Johnson, VP, content and business development, for Hearst Magazines Digital.

"It's a chance to get our great content in front of Yahoo users who have already demonstrated interest."

Apparently, two Esquire.com articles have already enjoyed traffic increases thanks to Yahoo Buzz, receiving 1.3 million click-throughs after being featured on the Yahoo homepage.

Newspapers that have signed up for Yahoo Buzz include USA Today, the Wall Street Journal and Entertainment Weekly.

Senators gave a strong message to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, to delay the planned December 18th vote on loosening the media ownership rules.

On July 7, Northcliffe Media announced its purchase of 26 weeklies from Trinity Mirror Southern for £64.12 million.

This Round Table discussion is a critical one: how to engage the youth and younger generations in newspaper reading.  This subject is of particular importance in terms of democracy-building and responsible citizenship in the future.  As one of the panel members reminded the audience – a decline in youth readership is equal to general readership decline.  It was also emphasized that one third of the world’s population are “youth” (under the age of 25).

The Forth Worth Star-Telegram (Texas) launched a redesign Sunday, reducing width, adding color, and making stories shorter and adding quick-read formats.

Twelve US newspaper companies are preparing to extend a partnership with Yahoo Inc. to share advertising and editorial content. Among them is second-largest publisher McClatchy Co., who last year considered an alliance with Gannett Co. and Tribune Co.

In an era of rising, nearly generalized, citizen journalism, some websites are going further than giving a voice to users and paving the way to the future of journalism and news content. A future that would not only be user-generated, but also customized to target tastes and interests. Among those progressive websites, Newsvine’s innovative process puts it in a leading position (alongside others such as NewsTrust).

What is the purpose of a front page? Is it to provide a comprehensive look at the day’s top stories? Or is it to win back dwindling circulation numbers?

That’s the question paper editors are asking themselves across the U.S., reports AJR in its June/July issue, at publications ranging from modest regional dailies to national powerhouses. The revelation: presentation matters.

Reading the Wall Street Journal's survey of readers who sent in their suggestions about "The Perfect News Site, 2016," a couple of conflicts of interest caught my eye which show that newspapers might not be able to rely on their readers for advice on how to hang on to them.

There is a serious predicament facing that century-tested bastion of journalism, the people who decide what the public should know, the ultimate conventional gatekeepers; news editors. Some believe that editors are more necessary than ever in sifting through the plethora of information on the Internet. Others feel that online interactivity could replace traditional editors with peer-to-peer suggestions. In these respects, the question is, in the digital world, will editors thrive or will they die?

The Wisconsin State Journal has opened its editorial process to its readers. They are now able to choose which stories they would like the paper to print on the following day's front page. Four to five stories are listed daily on the paper's website under a section entitled "Reader's Choice" on which readers vote.

As the phenomenon picks up speed, more and more citizen journalism projects, many with different themes, are popping up all over the Web. San Francisco Bay Area based iTalkNews is one of them. Launched in beta a few months ago, iTalkNews focuses on national news, combining user contributions with wired news from the Associated Press. Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of the site is that all articles are fact-checked before being posted on the main page, somewhat of a contradiction to other CJ sites that thrive on the rawness of their material. Elizabeth Lee, iTalkNews' co-founder and editor-in-chief explained some of the site's motives and goals through an email interview with the Editors Weblog:

1. When did you launch iTalkNews? What was your motivation for starting the site? Did you have any influences?

We launched iTalkNews in the spring of 2005. Since launching, many people have drawn comparisons between iTalkNews and OhMyNews, based in South Korea. While the seminal OhMyNews was definitely an inspiration for us, we set up iTalkNews not as a counterpart to OhMyNews, but as an independent collaborative journalism site based in the U.S.

What we see here in the United States, and what we’re trying to remedy, is that something is wrong in traditional journalism. In a world where information is becoming more interactive daily, in news there is still a disturbing linearity of information from top-down, with very little feedback from the people involved or being affected. For instance, in the aftermath of 9/11 and now during the Iraq War, many people are finding it difficult to find a reliable news source, or even commentary, because they suspect news sources to be politically aligned or biased, and so many stories have been either undercovered or omitted completely. People have begun to look to blogs for supplemental information, but blogs aren’t usually fact-checked and don’t have established systems of accountability.

We’re not looking to replace big media. However, what we want to provide is an alternative source of news for people to have their voices heard, and create a more reciprocal flow of information.
